Best Of M.I.A.'s Songs December 27, 2007 Jill Dunsmore 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
M.I.A.'s Paper Planes, from her sophomore album Kala is the best song you will ever hear. It is just phenomenal. It's fun and easy to listen to, but it still delivers powerful vocals and great beats.
Love the direct punch to the gut mix in the chorus February 14, 2008 David B. Spalding (ChromeJob.com) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Keep hearing this on XM ... and just love the funny sound effects used in the chorus. I'm thinking I need to hear more of this young lady.
Flying away August 11, 2008 Amaranth (Northern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
MIA's "Paper Planes" has brought this famous Sri Lankan rapper into the public consciousness because it's featured in the "Pineapple Express" movie. The video has also faced censorship because of MIA's juxtaposition of gunshots and cash registers. MIA has also claimed that she'll retire from the music business. In "Paper Planes",MIA critiques xenophobic views of immigrants that see them as thieves and killers. It's got a catchy rhythm; MIA is creative in her use of percussion. It's not the usual rap song in some ways... thankfully. Unfortunately,it's not that exciting a song, despite the theme. It becomes repetitive. MIA's Sri Lankan roots are hidden. It's not a particularly memorable song. It flies, but it doesn't fly high.
Favorite track from 2007! August 9, 2008 Nobody Really (o-HI-o) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of the great indie songs of 2007 is finally getting heard by mainstream audience. Will be a "rump shaker" and send you "straight to hell" and beyond. A now and future classic.
