3 out of 5 stars Flashback: 90's Brit Pop   April 9, 2008

Remember when Brit pop was the flavor of the month? Oasis, Spice Girls, all seemingly ruled the world. Well, now it's trying to make a comeback with Leona Lewis, and former HillSong singer and song-writer, little Natasha Bedingfield.

This time, she doesn't bring any phony rap artists, but rather, herself and a backup singer. The result is distinctively Brit Pop, but maybe a little more suited to today's audiences. The vocals are the same as always for Bedingfield. The music itself is typical modern music, take it or leave it, although my description is a bit vague. The song is minorly catchy, but pretty much standard Brit Pop stuff that is overly forgettable.

Overall, forgettable, Brit Pop, standard, maybe a bit boring. So if you like Bedingfield's other "work," you'll like this song. If you're a hit radio zombie, you'll also like it. For the rest of us, just pass. You're not missing anything.

Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine" is pretty much standard,feel-good fare. It sounds like an opening theme for a TV show. One can imagine it playing in the background for a TV show such as ABC's "Private Practice", where Dr. Addison frolics on the Southern California beaches. "Pocketful of Sunshine" succeeds because it's only Natasha and a backup singer. It's not highly synthesized. There isn't any Sean Kingston doing pretentious rap. The chorus is the song's high point, when Natasha belts out "Take me away/to the sweet escape." Glorious escapist summer fun. If you can't afford going to the beach, this song is like sitting on the warm sand, listening to the waves.

I've listened to this music over and over and haven't gotten tired of it. It's one of the most uplifting songs I've heard in awhile.

1 out of 5 stars POP JUNK   June 18, 2008

This is the worst piece of pop junk I have ever heard. Not worth the plastic it is made from. And what kind of title is Pocketful Of Sunshine anyway? What, are we in junior high school? I'm sure the kiddies there think it's great. Give me grown up music.
