Method Of Oates Love August 8, 2008 Michael Kerner (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
When it came down to the music of the 70's and 80's, there have been few groups far and in between that have survived the aradox of being guilty pleasures. While some of them have fizzled in record sales like Chicago, others have strived to still making quality music. That has shown for well over 35 years with Hall & Oates. During their career as a duo, Daryl and John have made some of the best guilty pleasures that still withstand the testiment of time, heart and soul. While they've suffered a few career setback in the late 80's and 90's, they've reunited and showed again just what great soul is really all about. They've also made several greatest hits albums over the years, and have a playlist for fans as their own. However, is the playlist good, or just a kiss not on the list. Playlist: Hall & Oates is a new inexpensive compilation series from SonyBMG, that features some of your favorite singers and performers at the top of their game. This 2008 Hall & Oates edition is a single disc compilation that tries to showcase the duo well to a whole new generation. Unfortunately, it feels like it is a bit pale in comparison to other dynamic hits albums from Hall & Oates including the acclaimed 2004 Ultimate Hall & Oates double album, and the 2001 Very Best Of Hall & Oates, which highlighted their years at RCA very well from 1976-1984. Still, the album fares as a decent sampler for anyone who has not yet even owned a Hall & Oates record. the collection still does include some of their standards including One On One, Kiss On My List, as well as their first breakout hits including Sara Smile & Rich Girl. There are a few surprises here as well, including the rare radio single version of Out Of Touch and their last Top 40 hit Everything Your Heart Desires. While that might be all fine and dandy, there are a whole lot of great Hall & Oates tracks that really were overlooked including guilty pleasures like You Make My Dreams, Method Of Modern Love, and recent classics like Do It For Love and Getaway Car to name a few. All in all though, Playlist: Hall & Oates isn't bad for $5, but not great enough for die hard fans young and old. If you really want to buy a great Hall & Oates record for your music library, you're really much better off with Ultimate Hall & Oates or another hits collection instead. CD debut of several single versions August 18, 2008 Superbu (Los Angeles, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This new Hall & Oates "Playlist" contains the CD/download debuts of the American single version of "I Can't Go for That" (which was an edit of the extended remix) and the single version of "Kiss on My List" (slightly different edit on the guitar solo). Plus several other rare single versions. The sound is also quite good, not overly compressed like you'll find on many CDs today. Can't go wrong this one!
Nice Collection of 45 Mixes November 2, 2008 TomAzon (United States) This is the first hits collection where the manufacturer makes a bigger deal about the "eco-friendly" packaging than the music itself. This 14-song collection features the usual Hall & Oates hits from "Sara Smile" to "Everything Your Heart Desires". All in date order by the way. A nice touch is releasing 45-only versions on this album so collectors and people who have to have EVERYTHING by Daryl & John will pick this CD up. The sound quality is good, as are the vocals, production, musicianship, etc. It's no wonder why the Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted the best music duo in the industry. One thing I didn't like is that the inner notes say that there are "Full liner notes, photos, and more included as a .pdf file on this CD". I put it in the computer and searched through and it only has the music. Another thing about the packaging, I really would like to see new pictures instead of 20-year old shots. I saved the best news for last. This album features the remixes of "Don't Change" and "I Don't Wanna Lose You". Overall, it's a good hits package for all the reasons stated above, but for a bigger list of hits, get the "Essential Hall & Oates", or better yet, get ALL Hall & Oates CD's.
