5 out of 5 stars Passionate about all things Science Fiction   November 6, 2002

This is the only magazine that I've maintained my subscription to for more than a decade. If you are passionate about science fiction you will love this magazine. It covers all topics related to Science Fiction. Obviously this includes movies and television, but in every issue there are regular features that cover what is new in science fiction books, animes, games and comics.

While I enjoy their coverage of the newest big-budget, blockbuster movies, I also appreciate that they understand that there are many fans with less mainstream tastes. Starlog regularly has articles devoted to long forgotten or "cult" science fiction tv and movies of the past. Heck, even most of the advertisements are science fiction oriented.

If you want to know what is happening in the world of sci-fi this is your source.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic SF Magazine   November 10, 2002

This magazine is fantastic. It's a shame it can't be found in Australia any more. I love the pictures and articles, on every SF show known to SF fans. Maybe it's time to ship some more out to the SF starved fans here in Oz. A quality magazine like Starlog is hard to find.

4 out of 5 stars Still better than the rest   October 23, 2006

I guess any magazine that has been around for 30 years is going to disappoint some people sooner or later, but Starlog has continued to cover the science fiction genre in its many facets: current and upcoming blockbusters, classic films, books, television (hits and cult series), comics, and more.

It also features the best genre writers out there, including noted film historians Tom Weaver and Will Murray. But perhaps my favorite aspect of this magazine is that it writes about the films, books, tv series, etc., and not about Hollywood gossip that you can get anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Leader In Science Fiction   May 27, 2005

"Starlog" offers its readers a number of interesting, in-depth articles in every issue. When you see "science fiction," don't write off this magazine as strictly for fans of Star Trek and Star Wars. In fact, "Starlog" covers not only the sci-fi genre, but fantasy, adventure, and even a little history as well. Consider the latest issue out as of this writing. It includes an interview with Hayden Christiansen(Anakin Skywalker), as well as "Star Wars" producer, Rick McCullum. It touches on comic-to-screen films such as "Batman Begins," "Sin City," and "The Fantastic Four." It has a brief mention of "Kingdom of Heaven" and talks with the directors of the animated "Madagascar." Articles on plays(Spammalot), TV series, books, etc. are also included.

One of the best things about "Starlog" is the colorful and vividly brilliant photos from filmsets, conventions, and promos that are included with articles that vary in size from one brief paragraph to a few pages long. Also, there isn't any bouncing around to page "52" after you've read a couple of paragraphs of an article. All of the articles are complete and you don't have to jump to the back of the magazine to finish them.

A great magazine that offers fans both casual and hardcore an inside look at the world of sci-fi/fantasy and how those who are part of it "make it so."

3 out of 5 stars About 3.5 stars, and often quite fun to read   March 6, 2007

I've read STARLOG magazine, on and off, since 1979, when I started really getting into the science fiction world in books and film and TV.

It still delivers some fun, even to this middle-aged SF lover. It makes me smile.

This is not a highbrow magazine, so it's unfair to judge it as anything but what it is: a review of SF offerings in a variety of media with a light hand. It's a magazine aimed squarely at a particular audience: SF fans. People who love sci-fi channel, and SF flicks, and SF books, and SF graphic novels, and SF video games and anime.

And the comics in the magazine still make me chuckle.

I mostly buy it nowadays when they focus on something I am especially interested in on television (Life on Mars, Doctor Who, Heroes) or on a film of special interest to me. And I am not disappointed.

For non fans of SF, for those who don't even want to associate with science fiction or horror or fantasy "geeks" or who disdain things like SF conventions, well, this is NOT the zine for you. Go elsewhere.

And frankly, I think the review by John Marvel "Marvel Stockholder" is unduly harsh. So harsh, in fact, that I looked at other reviews by this reviewer. The revelation: He hardly likes ANYTHING. He gives one star reviews to just about everything (how does he have time to hate so much stuff?) including television shows such as X Files, That Girl, Gilmore Girls, Bewitched, West Wing, 24, and Boston Legal, and to films such as The Devil's Backbone, both Men In Black, and Happy Feet. There is such a variety of genres and styles and critical praise (or not) in that list that you'd think he'd like ONE or TWO or THREE of those. I offer "Marvel Stockholder's" persistent record of extreme dislike of nearly all things televised or filmed in order to provide some perspective to his one-star review of Starlog. It's not THAT bad, folks. Honestly. And you may have a broader field of what we enjoy than the previous reviewer.

So, if you're like me and just have great fun with SF, silly or highbrow or somewhere middling, then pick up a copy of STARLOG and see if it does something nice for you. You might be pleasantly surprised.
