A Great Sewing & Style Magazine for garment sew-ers June 16, 2006 ReadMakeSew (Chicago, IL USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
And much too hard to find in the U.S. The price for this subscription, though, is a bit steep compared to pricing in stores when it IS available here. The Aussies are totally sensible & practical in their approach to garment sewing & style. This magazine features regualar articles based on the SWAP (Sewing With A Plan) system of wardrobe building/sewing: color co-ordinated "capsules" of necessary but interchangeable garments in simple shapes to make as each season's "base." You can, of course, interpret "simple" shapes as you see fit. SWAP contests have become a "staple" theme of various web-sewing communities - a great way to motivate yourself to sew and to do so sensibly--you, know? So you actually have something to wear when you open your drawers or closet? Instead of just a mish-mash of things you made because your fabric-buying jones got the better of you too often and nothing "goes" with anything else? Another fabulous thing: the models are real women, not 15 y/o anorexics. Each issue usually has one very thorough long article: 20 pages on pants and pants fitting or a huge section on beading and embellishment or an exhaustive comparison/evaluation article on how to decide if you need a serger and how to pick features. And, of course there are new pattern and runway fashion-season reviews regularly. For Northern Hemisphere readers it can be fun and disconcerting to think about our Australian sisters wearing the same fashions each "fashion" season but having to adapt them to their opposite "weather" season. Reviews/pictures of Big 4 patterns and a heavy spicing of Indies. Latest issue had a great piece on Christine Jonson and her designs for knits with lycra.
Australian Stitches is best English-language sewing magazine in the world June 26, 2007 Julie I. Dunn (Dallas, TX USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Not only are the folks at Australian Stitches friendly and personable, they cover the entire range of sewing from A to Z. They offer hints on sewing with specialty fabrics, new pattern reviews - including all the independent pattern lines, alteration instructions with the most clear and easy-to-understand diagrams in print, fashion forecats and suggestions for how each age and shape of woman can adapt them to her personal needs, showcase vintage, new, and award-winning student clothing designers, demonstrate suggested colors, fabrics and patterns for Sewing With a Plan, and feature a total makeover of a reader -- all this, every single month. The very, very best!!!!

Too soon to evaluate or I'd probably give 5 stars. As a garment sewer and doing lots of research and having recommendations, I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it. I received a month or two earlier than promised, coming from Australia, that's great.
