Great but not for beginners December 11, 2004 J. Uren (Mountain View, CA USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an excellent chess magazine. Having said that, the level is pretty advanced. If you are buying it as a gift, this is not for a casual chess player. If the giftee plays in tournaments, or belongs to a club, or owns a dozen or two chess books, go ahead. The magazine comes out 8 times a year. Depending on how much is going on in the chess world (and perhaps depending on how hard the writers feel like working?) the magazine comes out somewhat sporadically. This is actually kind of fun. Just when you've almost forgotten about it, an issue shows up in your mailbox. Or you've only just finished an issue, when another arrives. In some years, issue #8 came in Jan or even Feb of the following year. For me, slow delivery is OK. Most (semi-serious) chess players follow events online (e.g. TWIC) and already have up-to-date standings and results. New In Chess provides photos, anecdotes, and in-depth analysis, so some people (I'm one) don't require airmail delivery.
Without any doubt the best chess magazine in the world !! March 28, 2003 Luiz Gentil Jr - Ipecea (Fortaleza, Ceara Brasil) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
GM Timman and his staff produces a wonderful chess magazine, probably the best in the world. Most of the times the games are analyzed by the players themselves and this is very important as we can see the player's ideas behind the moves and some psycological insights of that particular game.
