Product Description
The place to be for all things dolls - from antique to contemporary. The number one collectors magazine, and the ultimate doll authority. Doll Reader is full of lively and informative articles on what's hot to buy and news in the doll world, and also great photography.

5 out of 5 stars A Good General Doll Magazine   February 13, 2008

I have subscribed to Doll Reader off & on for over 15 years. It the longest lasting fashion doll magazine devoted to that subject that I know of. There are lots of color pictures of the newest dolls coming out; a new pattern almost every issue for a different doll out of the many fashion dolls available; lots of ads for different doll shops with web addresses, phone numbers, etc.; an couple of interesting Q & A sections on different types of dolls. Since there are getting to be fewer and fewer doll magazines on the market these days, I enjoy this magazines and the many dolls covered in it.

4 out of 5 stars An ongoing project, a good and varied magazine   December 9, 2004

Review updated February 2007 and September 2008. Madavor Media, LLC, the parent company that owns Doll Reader, has recently acquired IDEX. So I would imagine that we will see even more coverage of what's new in the doll collecting world! In fact, DR has inherited the former magazine Doll (not to be confused with Dolls), a UK-based international doll hobbyist magazine which had ceased publication shortly before DR took it over. So there will be a transitional phase (perhaps almost over already) while the additional materials and readership are considered.

Mostly I like Doll Reader. It is usually in the shadow of Dolls magazine, but it can be a more lively periodical and the editor(s) seem open to reader inquiries and material submissions. I think if more collectors would do a little research on their favorite subjects, and submit articles, that we could have a really informative magazine going on here. Doll Reader has the potential to grow into a lively and au courant reader-driven project, like the fashion doll magazine Haute Doll.

My biggest quibble with DR and other hobbyist magazines is that they are advertiser-driven. They are not driven by a passion to find out interesting things, provide balanced and neutral reporting, and the like. While there are historical articles, mostly there are blurbs about new products, which are often little more than boosters to the ads -- there is seldom if ever helpful critical information, and the photos of new items are generally those provided by the manufacturers.

These are just rules of thumb, of course, and not without exceptions, but I have grown frustrated with the whole hobby magazine market, because of how shallow it can be.

On the other hand, the photos, and the patterns, are terrific, and the letters forums and blurbs on doll artists can be very interesting as well.

This is a really great magazine. I would recommend it to any doll lover or collector. It has information on happenings, gives you info on doll artists, new collectibles, and they have the annual Doll of the Year (DOTY) awards. Great magazine!!
