Fantastic resource for PC builders. May 20, 2003 Tom (Long Beach, CA) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
A few weeks ago, I started building my first PC from scratch and have found Computer Shopper magazine the best resource. The reviews and articles really helped me decide what parts to use, and the recent "how to" guide on assembling a PC was a godsend. I don't think there's another magazine out there that provides such in-depth advice -- their writers really know what they're talking about! Plus, if I can't find what I'm looking for in the magazine itself, Computer Shopper's Web Buyer directs me to the sites where I can find what I need -- both technical help and the cheapest parts. I can't thank them enough for saving me all that time I would have spent surfing the Internet myself. I'd definitely recommend that anyone interested in customizing their own PC should sign up for Computer Shopper.
A Valuable Consumer Resource November 29, 2001 Timothy Walker (Orlando, Florida USA) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
When I was a lad, back when RAM was measured in kilobytes and dinosaurs roamed the earth, Computer Shopper was among the best (of few) sources of information for prospective buyers of computer components. Some of my colleagues referred to it as "the yellow pages" both because of its physical characteristics and its content: few reviews, fewer articles, and about 1000 pages of advertisements and dealer info. Two decades later, there has been little change... but all of it for the better. Now that we live in the Internet age, a few hundred excess pages have been trimmed down to URLs, leaving more room for actual content. While Computer Shopper still averages fewer articles and editorials than other PC magazines, every issue is filled with page after page of excellent reviews, giving readers accurate details on new products instead of hollow benchmark scores. Additionally, each issue contains the Web Buyer directory, a listing and brief critique of the web sites of nearly one hundred reputable vendors. To sum up, if you're the sort of person who buys computer parts weekly, then you can not live without a subscription to this magazine. But even if you only purchase new equipment once or twice a year, you'll want to have a copy of Computer Shopper nearby... at this price, you might as well subscribe!
Despite the Changes, Still a Winner May 20, 2003 Max Armbruster (washington, dc USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
OK, so there aren't as many ads (which incidentally helps its portability), but I've been reading Computer Shopper for 6 years now, and I still find it a great read and a very valuable resource. I read every issue not only for its usefulness, but also for entertainment value - I guess you can call me a tech geek! It's a great tool for keeping up to date with the latest high tech gear - I particularly like the Alfred Poor's Computer Cures articles and how-to guides for us "do-it-yourselfers". Its features and buying guides are relevant and very informative. Over the past few years, I have bought several computer systems for myself and family members, thanks to advice from the experts at Computer Shopper and their recommendations on where to buy. So, even though I do miss the "tech-mall" feel of the old magazine, I'm still a fan and would recommend it to anyone interested in buying technology.
Not much value add May 27, 2003 Gadgester (New York) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
The problem with Computer Shopper is, it's neither a serious trade magazine like PC Mag, or a shopper's paradise like its former self was. If you want hardware tips, Maximum PC is way better. You can find pretty much everything in Computer Shopper for free on the web ...
GOOD READ, VERY USEFUL May 20, 2003 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have been reading Computer Shopper since it helped me buy my first home computer three years ago. I usually save the previous 12 issues for reference. Product guides are very useful and I use the articles to help me upgrade my computer or solve nagging problems that I can't fix. I also use the Web Buyer section to discover new sites.
