Among The New Yorker staff writers, Ken Auletta, who covers the media business and is an authority on the communications industry, is the author of 9 books, including the best-seller Three Blind Mice: How the TV Networks Lost Their Way. Seymour M. Hersh has written for The New Yorker since 1971. He has won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize for his investigations into the My Lai massacre, and is the author of eight books, including Chain of Command. The legendary John McPhee, on staff since 1965, teaches writing at Princeton. Jerome Groopman is a Harvard Medical School professor and the author of over 150 scientific articles. His latest book, The Anatomy of Hope, was a best-seller.

Magazine Layout:
The New Yorker is a readers' magazine. Articles range from short Talk of the Town pieces to in-depth explorations of politics and world affairs. Short reviews of restaurants, movies and the arts in Goings On About Town can be quickly skimmed, while, at the back of the book, longer, richer reviews of selected books, plays and movies can be read at a more leisurely pace. And the dozen or so cartoons in each issue offer their sheer wit and entertainment.

The New Yorker is funny. When you first subscribe it is like joining a snotty secret society with rights and rituals all its own. You've got to want to be a New Yorker reader when you first approach the magazine. Your right of passage is all the time you'll waste reading through every entry in the "Goings on about Town" section. You'll puzzle at 3/4 of the cartoons and forgive the other quarter for being only obliquely funny. But you'll forge ahead because you must join the cognoscenti.

Soon enough, you'll be one of the elect. You'll skim over "Goings on" on the way to Talk of the Town, where you'll read only the first two pieces unless the title of a later one entices you. Then page-by-page you'll survey the cartoons (which you adore by now!) taking note of articles you'll want to come back to. If a movie review at the back grabs you, you'll dive straight into it and finish off with The Back Page where big laughs surely await. Then comes fine tooth comb read!ing which usually begins for me with Shouts and Murmurs - a light entree into the meatier sections of the magazine.

Sitting down with the New Yorker once a week is a pleasing routine, a cultural badge all at once of honor, and a way to sniff out elitist pseudo - intellectuals like yourself in a crowd. You can say things like "Did you see what Hertzberg was up to this week?" and know immediately if somebody's an initiate. If you want to seem hip, literate, in the know, subscribe to the New Yorker. You'll never read 3/4 of it but will never regret it either.

The New Yorker is both a blessing and a curse for me. It's a great magazine, but sometimes I feel so compelled to keep up with my weekly New Yorkers that I find it feeling like a burden.

My brother has a system, he just shared it with me, I hope he doesn't mind me sharing with you. The day a new issue arrives, he immediately goes through page by page, removes the subscription cards and advertisements, reads the cartoons and asides ("constabulary notes from around the world," "Block that Metaphor"), scans the poems, and gets the lay of the land. He then goes back later with a map in mind of which articles need to be read, and can tackle them undistracted by the rest of the magazine. I don't know, he says it works for him, he never falls behind.

My grandfather read the New Yorker every week. He had a coffee table filled with the newspapers and magazines he subscribed to. He also drank tanqueray. He did not do Sudokus or listen to Gabby La La, but perhaps would have if born in a different era. He had big bookcases filled with wonderful books. Sometimes a visitor would marvel at how many books he owned, and ask "have you really read all these books?" He would answer, "no, not all." And after the visitor left, he would gently and with remarkable restraint, explain to us why the question asked reveals a lack of education and sophistication. "...any serious reader knows that nobody has read all the books in their collection"

In my review of Highlights Magazine (or as my daughter calls it, "Maz-a-Gine"), I called it the New Yorker of kids literature. So it is only fair for me to now pronounce the New Yorker to be the Highlights Magazine of adult lit. A little old-fashioned, snobby, a touch stale, but still the best there is. I didn't even mind it during the Tina Brown era, it lost a little of its uniqueness temporarily but was still a cut above the rest. I wouldn't mind if there was a little more variety in the poetry, less of the same types of dreary poems about growing older and having your lover die from the same dreary poets, more of an effort to discover new poets. I love the fiction issues when they attempt to showcase new writers.

I'd possibly get more out of it if I lived in New York. As it is, I'm mostly taunting myself by reading the "Goings on about town."

Lately I've been especially enjoying the political essays in "The Talk of the Town" by the likes of Hendrik Hertzberg, David Remnick, as well as the journalism of Seymour Hersh. This kind of reporting is more important than ever, important to be appearing in a mainstream, respected publication during a time when the executive branch is doing everything in its power to intimidate an already cowed media. Henrick Hertzburg's recent essay on the proposed flag burning amendment. I intuitively know what he is saying, intuitively believe it to be morally and philosophically correct, but can't articulate my thoughts with the elegance and clarity of Mr. Hertzburg. He concisely lays out not just how wrong the amendment is, but also how irrelevant the issue is in all but a symbolic, abstract dimension. He writes that Republic and Democrat supporters "do not seriously regard it is as a good let alone necessary idea," and sprinkles in the beautiful parenthetical "(intellectual corruption, like the venal variety is no stranger to either party, even if, in the present era, both varieties are more common among the Republicans.)" Good stuff, Papa would have appreciated it.

I lost interest in the magazine during the Tina Brown era. Now I find that the magazine has improved a great deal under it's current staff. The only problem I have is in keeping up with reading every issue.

Recent articles I've enjoyed range from the humor of David Sedaris (his memoir centered around a nasty little neighbor girl was hilarious) to the magazine's famous far-flung, quirky reportage (Mark Singer's June 30th article on Worm Farming in Oklahoma was a great example of what I'm talking about).

One thing I'm upset about, however, is that in the past couple weeks, the ad pages have outnumbered the article pages. Plus, they include scent samples that actually give me a headache. If I want ads and perfume, I'll go buy a copy of Vanity Fair. Please, New Yorker, stick to what you do best!

The cover art is still the best in the business and the cartoons keep rolling right along like the Hudson.

I've subscribed to the New Yorker for at least the last 8 years. Like National Geographic, I find it hard to throw away old issues, and I wind up storing them in boxes imagining that I will someday catch up on missed articles- or revisit old favorites. With a new issue arriving weekly, this is will probably never happen, unless, of course, I suspend my subscription- which I would hate to do.

Contrary to its dry and stodgy reputation among those who have never picked up a copy, the New Yorker is eminently engaging and readable. The "New Yorker Style" seems to be one of continuous vivid description- but always to serve the subject. It is like the "NPR: All Things Considered" of print. Indeed, for me, the magazine's ever varied subject matter (no subject is out of bounds for the magazine- as long as it can be presented in an interesting fashion) is often beside the point. A typical article gives a such rich sense of persona and place that makes reading on any topic- whether it be an inside look at a noted political figure or the recent turmoil in Zimbabwe or a trip inside the head of a noted film director (stuff that would hardly interest me otherwise)- a sensual delight. Put another way, one thing all New Yorker writers seem to have in common is an exceptional gift for prose.

This is not to say that the magazine is all style and no substance. On the contrary, the New Yorker frequently throws a very big hat into the ring of popular discourse on a wide range of topics. Noted New Yorker writers will frequently pop up on talking-heads shows defending their controversial, yet compelling, assertions.

The New Yorker is often in depth- with very little fluff space- that, with minimal page real estate eaten up by graphic designer fill- articles often run to great length. On the other hand, those who are in the mood for a bite sized morsel can read the cartoons, arts reviews at the back of the magazine, or, my favorite part- the Talk of the Town- a half dozen or so slices-of-life features with range from the oddball to the frightening.

Writers such as Jeffrey Toobin are often amazingly prescient in their early analysis of various rising luminaries on the political and cultural scene. One reason to hold on to old copies of the magazine is have the ability to go back again and see how much of the political behavior of, say, Dick Cheney, had been foretold by his earlier actions.

The New Yorker is also unpretentious. While many articles (and indeed cartoons) assume a bit more in depth cultural and/or pop-cultural knowledge than the unadventurous reader of USA-Today, (or, worse yet, MSN.com) might possess, the writers are not haughty or preachy. Humor abounds, especially in back pages devoted to critics. Though I frequently disagree with film critics Anthony Lane (capricious) and Terrance Rafferty (curmudgeony), their critiques make me laugh out loud. The truly unpretentious nature of the writing of the New Yorker is clearest in the "Shouts and Murmurs" section. Any magazine that prints a lovingly composed work of absolute nonsense by Steve Martin from time to time is worth giving a shot.

It started in a doctor's waiting room in my adolescence. Great cartoons, and the best were Charles Addams's. Sooo macabre, and like looking at something vaguely forbidden. Then there were the one paragraph reviews - the movie reviews especially. Growing up in Erie, PA, didn't give me much of a chance to see the variety of films in the New Yorker, but that taste of what I was missing was one of the things that got me out of Erie as soon as I could "git." As I grew, so did the depth of my reading, and the New Yorker always had something to offer. I was especially pleased when a Profile of magazine length would come out - everything you never wanted to know about someone you never heard of, but if it was in the New Yorker the subject became someone worth knowing. The New Yorker expanded my world. Years of reading finally got us to Tricia Brown and her near successful attempt to ruin a great magazine. She pushed the New Yorker from an art and literary journal into celebrity journalism, and did her best to skuttle the cartoons as well. Thank goodness she didn't last. Once David Remnick took the reins the mag was back on track, and though I'm not totally pleased with the modern New Yorker Remnick has returned it to a high percentage of its former value. I just can't do without the New Yorker. When I travel out of country it's the only thing I miss. When I'm home it's the best thing in my mailbox. The New Yorker is an American treasure, and a little bit like New York itself - exciting, brash, clever, and stimulating. Subscribe!
