"TONY" Has The Complete Scoop On New York City! August 12, 2003 Jana L. Perskie (New York, NY USA) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
Everyone who lives in New York City, Long Island, or the tri-state area, should have a subscription to Time Out New York, ("TONY"). This weekly magazine contains all the information anyone would need to know to enjoy any, and all, aspects of The City. I also recommend this magazine to out-of-towners who vacation here a few times a year, and want to be "in the know." The writing is clear and concise, with a slightly funky style. There are complete weekly listings of special events, including things to do for free in NYC; all kinds of tours, including wonderfully informative walking tours, and bird watching in Central Park; films and movie reviews; theater - Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off Broadway listings and reviews; concerts of all kinds, including free street concerts, and barge concerts; music and reviews; dance; clubs and nightlife for all those from 18 to 80; opera; restaurants & ratings for all budgets; a complete museum listing, with all pertinent information; book reviews and a listing of weekly readings & book signings by authors; sports listings; radio & TV listings; shopping and sales, etc.. Some of the articles are geared to the twenty-something crowd, but they are fun, and keep you updated about the latest fads and fashion. This is the most "in-the-know," savvy magazine for everything in NYC! The Best!! JANA
One of the MUST READ magazines in America today December 5, 2003 K. Chang (Northern Cal) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
You don't have to live in NYC to appreciate all that this magazine has to offer. While it is mostly a listing of events, shows, concerts, etc ... of what is happening in NYC - unlike most other towns in America, when an event is happening in NYC, it's just a little important - especially in a pop cultural context. After all, NYC is still the center of the TV networks, publishing, books, news, art, dance, fashion, foods, nightlife, etc ... You get a weekly pulse of what is going on - on Broadway & off. Who is performing in town at the different venues from punk to cabaret? You get great music reviews and interesting movie reviews (much different than your hometown papers). You get a glimpse of fashion, the hottest clubs, the best restaurants and cool things to buy. The writing is not snobbish or pretentious. It's like having a hip friend who is still willing to hang out with you even though you live in fly-over country. They know all the cool places but they also know where to get a $.75 Pabst Blue Ribbon. And really, that is the ultimate epitome of cool (versus PAPER MAGAZINE who tries too hard to be cool). So, if you're interested in what is going on in NYC and what might become big in the US, you want to get to the front of the line and read TONY (as they call themselves). It is one of the best magazines in America right now - they are what NY magazine was 10-15 years ago - and what a magazine is supposed to be - it's supposed to make you smarter without you knowing it!
The guide to NYC. November 4, 2004 laurabee8 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I first learned about Time Out while living in London. The London edition of this magazine became my constant companion, allowing me to find great events. Now living just outside of NYC, TONY was my first magazine subscription at my new apartment. Offers many free events, as well as its usual picky reviews. Great for a one-resource list of the week's events.

Time Out New York, or TONY, has it all. Every little thing that's going down in New York is covered. More importantly, you can actually locate salient information without having to wade through 20 pages of transgender massage ads as in the Village Voice.
Essential for any New Yorker May 21, 2004 R. Giron (New York, NY) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This magazine does a great job of featuring good articles at the beginning and then breaking down events you might want to do in New York City that week. The magazine is organized into various categories that are color coded so that when you get it, you can just skip to the section you're interested in. There's a whole city out there to discover and TONY can help point you in the right direction.
