Amazon.com Review The Hollywood Reporter is one of the most un-Hollywood-like magazines being published today. You won't find any of the chatty gossip or full-page flash of Peoplemagazine, nor will you find the same range of topics (with the occasional lack of depth) of Entertainment Weekly. Rather, this magazine is the definitive source for information on the entertainment industry in the U.S. (there's an international issue published weekly), including movie, TV, theater, and DVD reviews; casting calls; box office rankings; and weekly MPAA ratings; as well as overviews of everything from the music industry to the commercial real estate market. While the entertainment industry itself is clearly the intended audience, anyone who wants to see the Hollywood that exists beneath the surface glitz that has become synonymous with Hollywood will find this magazine well worth the money. --Bill Hummel

I spent several years in the tv/movie industry. The Hollywood Reporter was required reading everywhere I worked--from the small, peripheral businesses to the major studios. Most people subscribe to both the Hollywood Reporter and Variety. If you can afford it, by all means subscribe to both. But if you're one of the millions trying to break into the business, you must read at least one, and, in my opinion, the Hollywood Reporter is the one to get. For one thing, the traditional magazine size makes it easier to handle than Variety's "newspaper" style. For another, the Hollywood Reporter just seems to provide more news and better writing (Variety uses an obnoxious shorthand--e.g., "prexy" for president; "pic" for movie (picture)). Finally, the Hollywood Reporter may be boring compared to Entertainment Weekly, but a trade publication that covers the entertainment industry is still a lot more exciting than one covering, say, the logging industry.

If you're interested in going beyond the gossip and into the mechanics of the entertainment industry, then the Hollywood Reporter is for you. It covers television, film, video games, music and more. Find out about the latest business deals, contracts, technology and trends in the industry. I recommend this newspaper for anyone in (or wanting to break in) to the professional end of the entertainment industry. If you're looking for more consumer-friendly entertainment news, I recommend Entertainment Weekly. If you're looking for information about celebrity life, I recommend People or US Weekly.
For people in the business July 14, 2004 chicoer2003 (Fresno, CA United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Hollywood Reporter is not for the layman. It's a business magazine dealing with the deals of Hollywood, the numbers and profit. It's still interesting, but it's not for everyone. I tried a trial of the magazine and they would arrive a few days later. The July 8th issue arrived on July 11th. Yesterday's news is old news.
Hollywood Reporter January 9, 2007 L. Vitali 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have not yet received a single copy of this magazine. When I enquired about it I was told that the early November start-delivery date had been moved to late November, then early December. When I complained towards the end of December I was told there would be a 3-5 day 'investigation' and somebody would get back to me about it. I heard NOTHING. At the time, I protested saying that I had already paid good money for this service and yet there seemed to be no way to resolve it. The operator I spoke to told me and I quote, "You've complained to me and it will take 3-5 days'. This is pretty disgusting.
