I've been a fan of Greg Ginn's since his days in Black Flag. Unlike a lot of my friends, I have followed his career after he stopped playing punk and actually like his abstract work just as much as his early stuff. I was surprised when I heard of Jambang because Ginn hasn't released new material in a very long time. I bought this because it's Ginn and regardless of what direction he was going in, I figured I'd like it. I was right. Not expecting anything, Jambang blew me away. They are an instrumental band with a mandolin and synthesizer. Their songs get in a groove and stay there for lengthy periods, giving the listener a chance to get into a zone. Unlike a lot of his other bands, Ginn's guitar isn't the focal point of Jambang. His creative leads blend in with a solid rhythm section, but if you know his work, you can still tell it's him playing. I think I might have liked Jambang less if it was another project where Ginn was the spotlight. I've heard that before. This new band is a cohesive unit that plays really well together. Hopefully Ginn will take this on the road.
