Amazon.com Deva ("Deva" is a Hindu title for divine) Premal has attracted a following by framing ancient Hindu mantras within atmospheric, contemporary settings. The result on Embrace, her third release, is at times flavorful, at other times undistinguished, but it produces more intriguing moments than duds. On occasion, Premal aspires to Enya-like reverence (e.g., tracks 2 and 4), then elsewhere coos her ancient text atop gentle grooves and jazzy flutes (tracks 3 and 6) in a manner suggestive of Deep Forest. Some might describe it as "smooth chant." Highlights include "Shree Ram Jai Ram," a beautifully realized cross-pollination of East and West (highlighted by Kit Walker's free-floating piano and Premal's resonant choir of voices) that hints at what Joni Mitchell might create if she tried her hand at Eastern music. --Terry Wood
Album Description EMBRACE, the long awaited new album from Deva Premal, finds this best-selling singer at the height of her art, expressing the ancient wisdom of mantra through a contemporary musical vision. Her radiant voice, richer and more assured than ever before, floats above a cool, sensual groove provided by some of today's finest world fusion artists and producers Miten and Kit Walker (Walela, Kitaro, Neal Schon). Deva Premal enthralled audiences worldwide with THE ESSENCE and LOVE IS SPACE. That phenomenal success continues with EMBRACE. Its relaxed, uplifting feel and elegant sense of space can only heighten the spell already cast by this mantra enchantress. "Majestic, deep and full of love," Deva Premal's EMBRACE is a lovely and moving next chapter from an artist whose incredible potential is only beginning to unfold.
Album Description Deva Premal's Embrace expands on the Eastern Indian fusion and ethereal vocals of her previous work, combining timeless mantras with contemporary arrangements. Innocent, soothing and laid-back. Features 8 tracks of sensual music for yoga, packaged in a slipcase. White Swan. 2004.

Embraced. May 17, 2002 Robert J Stoner (Mississauga, Ontario Canada) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Deva Premal's, "The Essence", was there for me when my life dramatically changed. Now, with this new release, I find myself drawn to this music. Her unique voice is soothing, the music sometimes hypnotic. It's easy to become lost or part of the mantra. For quiet time, I light a candle, some incense, and sing along. It is wonderful!
Nothing transcendant about Deva Premal... February 17, 2003 N. Mentor (Boston, MA) 15 out of 28 found this review helpful
If you like music to relax to or read a good book to, then this album might be appropriate. However, for music that would be useful for meditation or trance work, this or any album by Deva Premal I would not recommend. Her songs are repetitive and uninspiring. And given the album covers and pretense of mantra chanting, this is not ethnic to say the least. I'd recommend Russill Paul's yoga cd's instead.
Heartfelt Healing Music January 12, 2004 Yoga Dad 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I first became aware of Deva Premal's "Embrace" in my Yoga class and finally went out and recently got a copy of this CD. This music combines Mantras with eclectic music which draws from many styles. Deva Premal has one of the most incredibly beautiful and sincere voices I've ever heard and I find that this music truly reaches inside my heart and elevates my spirits. It's wonderful music not only to practice yoga with but to hear at any time. I can't recommend this CD highly enough, it is a truly wonderful gift of music and I am looking forward to getting more of her CDs. Namaste
Unique yet familiar June 24, 2003 B. Chandler (Arlington, Texas) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Deva primal is a unique mixture of her own interpretation or manufacture of mantras and using the Book "Healing Mantras" ISBN: 1564557359 for inspiration. An added plus is the repetitiveness of her songs instead of changing the mode every five minutes or so. Thos album is not necessarily a classic but a hybrid of classic and contemporary to close the gap between the two worlds. There are better representations in both worlds but that does not distract form this great contribution. Naturally each listener will select there own favorites, depending on circumstances and mood. Most of the time mine is "shree ram jai ram jai jai ram om." Reading the insert will add to the appreciation of these songs. It tells of her background and the purpose of each song or chant.
Healing Mantra August 19, 2002 George Hagar (Framingham, Massachusetts United States) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
You can find eight minutes and fifty-two seconds at the start of your busy day to chant with Deva Premal a most powerful Medicine Buddha healing chant "Teyata" contained on this disc; you owe it to yourself! Fill the "empty" moments of the day and stop mind-chatter with something useful and transformational. Highly recommended!
