| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? You've heard of mind control, haven't you? --Martin Keller

gentle music for children and adults June 24, 2001 audrey (white mtns) 34 out of 35 found this review helpful
I believe that music is a powerful and innate force in our lives, so I bought a number of CDs geared toward children when I gave birth. Most were harmless enough, many became tiresome after a while .... this CD still gets played regularly at our house after three years.International artists play and sing old favorites as well as songs new to us, but even the old favorites (Rock-a-bye-baby, Brahms Lullaby) are performed in engaging ways which renew their interest. Heaven knows, I am not one to seek out Kumbaya, but I even like that song here! Seventeen songs are presented from the US, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Ireland, Congo, Ghana, Cuba, Iceland, Israel, England, Russia and Germany. Some are sung, most are instrumental. All are very beautiful and soothing. The CD booklet contains a paragraph about each song with performance credits, original words and translation. A remarkably soothing collection of lullabies.
Sure-fire sleepy time soundtrack October 18, 2005 Willis Ellery (on the Atlantic) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I can't guarantee that your children will zonk out within 60 seconds of your hitting the "Play" button, but I can assure you that parents will enjoy the music as much as children will. And I would say it will probably take many more listenings for you to get completely sick of it, compared with the more saccharin options on the market. It is a lovely collection, diverse enough to make it interesting through-out, not at all repetitive. At the same time a quiet mood is maintained and each track follows easily upon the one before. One other thing I like about it is that we've gotten many years of use out of it--our oldest son (he's 7) has heard it since he was a baby and still enjoys hearing it.
Peaceful Music I love even the thousandth time October 24, 2005 Minerva (Redwood City, California) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
We received this as a gift shortly after the birth of our son, and it was a godsend from the start. These aren't the kind of lullabies that make you want to throw the stereo out the window, nothing nearly so syrupy or bland. I don't get sick of them either, because there's plenty of variety. Instead, it's a collection of various artists singing soothing yet really interesting music. George Winston's quiet piano, Bobby McFerrin's voice, they are all songs I might listen to even if we didn't have a baby- but the mood is perfect. We listen to it every night at bedtime, and I buy it for my friends when they have children.
Soothing for all October 20, 2005 Elizabeth Manion (Fort Worth, TX USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This CD is great for relaxing and wind-down as well as through the nap/sleep times. My 19-mo-old son and I like it. The music is consistant in tone and rhythm - unlike some others we've tried.
Music that appeals to dreamers the world over August 19, 1998 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
From the first tranquil track by Bobby McFerrin to the reassuring "Here I am," the international melodies and lyrics are sure to find universal appeal. Its untraditional yet soothing renditions will grow on you. This CD functions extremely well in setting a dreamy mood, and has become a family favorite for naptime and nighttime.
