To have resisted Def Leppard's radio power in their heyday, you'd have to have been a critic--and even some of us could hardly argue with the likes of "Photograph," "Animal," and "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Vault covers a decade and a half of hits by the one-time wonder boys of the new wave of British metal, but perhaps inevitably concentrates on singles from the multiplatinum Pyromania and Hysteria. It offers little meaning beyond fun fun fun, but there are hooks here that Noel Gallagher would punch a paparazzo for. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Open the VAULT...   July 28, 2002

Def Leppard was one of the most successful bands out of the '80s and one of my very favorite from the decade. They scored 15 top 40 singles from 1983-1993 and had quite a few radio and MTV favorites that missed the top 40; most of them are represented here. There has been some complaints about certain songs not being hits, but I've found the chart stats and will show how high they charted.

"Pour Some Sugar on Me" (video edit)--the most popular Lep song leads off this collection. A great singalong, heart-pounding rocker This is also an alternate version to the one on HYSTERIA: it is the video edit which is longer and, IMHO, superior. (peaked at #2)

"Photograph"--one of their breakthrough PYROMANIA hits: another great rocker with an unforgettable riff written "all about Marilyn Monroe" as Joe would say. (peaked at #12)

"Love Bites"--the collection's first ballad is a great one from HYSTERIA. (the band's only #1 single)

"Let's Get Rocked"--first of two ADRENALIZE tracks is a fun little rocker inspired by THE SIMPSONS (or so Joe says). (peaked at #15)

"Two Steps Behind"--a standout ballad from THE LAST ACTION HERO soundtrack is an acoustic based track that originally appeared on a B-side! (peaked at #12)

"Animal"--mid-tempo HYSTERIA rocker that is a rock radio staple even today. (peaked at #19)

"Foolin'"--second PYROMANIA track is a mysterious ballad/rocker with lots of atmosphere and a great guitar solo (peaked at #28)

"Rocket" (video edit)--tounge-in-cheek rocker from HYSTERIA which basically lists off titles of great classic rock songs. Unfortunately it is presented in a shorter edit than the album version. (peaked at #12)

"When Love and Hate Collide"--new song for the album is a pretty good ballad that could've used an electric solo, but it's fine as it is. (sadly, peaked only at #58)

"Armageddon It"--rip-roaring rocker from HYSTERIA and a good one at that. (peaked at #3)

"Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad"--the other ADRENALIZE track, this one an average ballad. (peaked at #12)

"Rock of Ages"--last PYROMANIA track is a memorable bombastic rocker which actually steals it's chorus from the Bible! (peaked at #16)

"Hysteria"--last song from the album of the same name. A sort-of ballad performed well. (peaked at #10)

"Miss You In a Heartbeat"--an okay ballad from RETROACTIVE was a bigger hit in Canada (#4) than America (#39) and that is why it is included.

"Bringing on the Heartbreak"--only track from HIGH 'N' DRY surprising only peaked at #61, but became a classic rock radio staple due to heavy exposure on early MTV. There is no "Switch 625" because it's not played on the radio with it. Great song anyway.

Well that's it, all the hits. There are problems: HYSTERIA is over-emphasized (though all were chart hits and it still misses one of those!), nothing from ON THROUGH THE NIGHT (though no songs were chart hits), and misses the other two top 40 tracks from ADRENALIZE ("Make Love Like a Man," #36; "Stand Up," #34). But overall, this is a great collection for newcomers and casual fans (and the only place to get the PSSOM video edit on CD).

5 out of 5 stars DEF LEPPARD'S "VAULT", ONE OF THE BEST!   February 22, 1999

If you're a fan of Def Leppard then you can't miss with this one. I personally have all of their albums, and there usually aren't many, if any songs on one of their albums that I don't like. I still find this album to be a wonderful addition to the collection. It gives people who aren't as familiar with the band a good place to start. It also gives long time fans like myself something to pop into the CD player that is nonstop hits. Did you ever notice that you can put several "Greatest Hits" collections in your player on shuffle and leave it playing all day long without ever once feeling like you'd wish one of the songs would hurry up and finish? Add this CD to your collection! I don't believe you'll regret it! As for other albums you may like if you like this band, well, starting in 1998 and moving forward into early this year there has been a phenomenal amount of activity within bands of this genre. Being incredibly curious I started cross referencing and came up with some great news! A lot of bands bailed out because of all the "grunge" (obviously that isn't the great news). Three that came up frequently in cross referencing that are out of commission are Skid Row, White Lion and Winger. White Lion's last release was 1992. Winger gave up and Kip Winger has released a new album but it sort of has a Bruce Springsteen flavor to it. Skid Row booted their vocalist Sebastian Bach and that was the end of that. I am happy to report that Sebastian Bach has released his first solo album, and to date it is one I personally would rate as a five star album. Sleeze Beez (sort of a Skid Row meets Warrant sound) has re-released a killer album. Unfortunately, for those of us who love this genre, they have split into two bands, neither of which would fall into this category. I would still say that their singer, Andrew Elt, has vocals worth checking out in his half of the split (with fellow Beez member Don van Spall) in a band called The Moon. Lizzy Borden's last release was 1995, Poison's and Quiet Riot's were 1996, and Whitesnake "broke up" again only to re-release a title in 1999. I wouldn't count any of these folks out yet. As for the rest...prepare to be surprised. The rest of these bands have new or re-released titles between 1998 and early 1999. AC/DC, Accept, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bang Tango, Baton Rouge, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Danger Danger, Dangerous Toys, Def Leppard, Dokken, FireHouse, Great White, Guns 'N Roses, Heavens Edge, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kane Roberts, Kiss, Kix, L.A. Guns, Metallica, Motley Crue, Mr. Big, Ozzy Osbourne, Ratt, Saigon Kick, Scorpions, Slaughter, Steelheart, Twisted Sister, Tyketto, Van Halen, and Warrant. I personally haven't heard all of these records yet, so I have to admit that it's possible some of these folks, like Kip Winger, have gone much more "Pop" than "Rock". I will say that of those I've heard that hasn't been the case. So, to quote Quiet Riot, "Cum On Feel The Noize". (For those who are unfamiliar, that's how they spelled it on the album!) You can start right here, with this album, Def Leppard's "Vault-Greatest Hits 1980-1995"!

2 out of 5 stars Bad Hits Package, Good Band   April 27, 2003

[I ACTUALLY RATE THIS 2.5 STARS, NOT JUST TWO.]
Def Leppard's first greatest hits CD, ranging from 1981-1995.
(NOT 1980, as suggested on the cover. There are ABSOLUTELY no songs present from their 1st album, "On Through the Night", which is by far one of their best albums ever)

I've never been a big fan of greatest hits packages because, in my point of view, they usually fail to capture the band's essence. Def Leppard is one of those disappointments. Don't get me wrong; Def Leppard is a great rock band which survived some turbulent times. However, like Skid Row's greatest hits (which had virtually every song written by the bassist, so you would hardly find any songs on there written by other bandmembers), this one features many songs mostly written by producer Mutt Lange, which is a shame because there was A LOT of material not present on this album.

With that said, I still recommend getting this. It will still get you hooked onto Def Leppard despite the bad tracklist. After all, "Photograph" got me hooked in the first place. I'd get it used, though, because more than 12 bucks is NOT worth this.

Here's the tracks:
"Pour Some Sugar on Me" - good song. I have no complaints here, even it being the first track.

"Photograph" - Let's face it, Photograph ROCKS! Great song. As said above, it got me hooked to Def Leppard.

"Love Bites" - one of the best of their ballads. Great chorus.

"Let's Get Rocked" - even though this song has some of the DUMBEST lyrics ever, it still rocks. I never was a fan of Adrenalize, but I'm glad this one's here.

"Two Steps Behind" - this is the acoustic version. Not bad, BUT THE ELECTRIC VERSION IS WAY BETTER. This one doesn't capture Leppard very well.

"Animal" - I never did like this track at all that much, and even though it was a hit, they should've replaced this one with my favorite from Hysteria, "Gods of War."

"Foolin'" - A very good ballad. I'm glad it's here.

"Rocket" - I like this song, BUT THIS IS THE RADIO EDIT. What's worse, they could've fit the original! That ticks me off.

"When Love & Hate Collide" - this one's actually new. It's a ballad, but I never really liked this one. It just doesn't sound like Def Leppard, and therefore, DOES NOT BELONG.

"Armageddon It" - Great song, no complaints.

"Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad?" - A ballad off of Adrenalize, but like "When Love & Hate Collide," this one isn't that great at all. Suggestion: Replace it with "White Lightning" and/or "Tear it Down," also from Adrenalize.

"Rock of Ages" - Great song, no complaints.

"Hysteria" - I really like Hysteria, but this one doesn't capture the band's essence all that well.

"Miss You in a Heartbeat" - Another ballad?! Not bad, but could've been dispensed for other songs, like maybe from the first album or my personal favorite from Pyromania, "Die Hard the Hunter."

"Bringing on the Heartbreak" - Another ballad, yet again. I really like this one, but UNFORTUNATELY they took off the Switch 625 instrumental piece that this song fades into. SHAME. Steve Clark must be rolling in his grave now.

All in all, this is definitely not one of the best greatest hits CDs ever. They should've made a Double Disc set. THAT would've pleased the Def Leppard fan much more. This song caters more towards the Hysteria/Adrenalize crowd, which is quite a shame because 1) Pyromania is their BEST album, 2) On Through the Night is an excellent piece of metal history and it has hardly any pop influence whatsoever AND IT'S EXCLUSION IS ALMOST INEXCUSABLE, and 3) For some of the really good songs, they cut essential parts from them. As such, this is disappointing to the extreme. My suggestion is to buy the individual albums, but if you feel the need to get this, I'd get it for a low price.

4 out of 5 stars Lack somes...Great C.D.   January 19, 2000

There is no question that this album is awesome because it has almost all the best Def Leppard songs off all time wich are all classics. But there's two problems with that greatest gits C.D. 1: they could had easily put on 17-18 songs instead of only 15 . 2) Hysteria is maybe over-represented and Rocket shouldn't be there and also the track Two steps behind is really weak and maybe one of their most average song they ever made. Anotehr thing where are the songs from On trough the night? they call it 80-95 and there's no songs from 1980's album. Wasted and Rock Brigade should certainly be on that cd. The greatest hits Cd as to show all the work from the band not only a part of it. Also songs like Lady Strange and Let It Go should be there. The adrenalize CD is in fact under-represented and a song like White Lightning should be on that. In all a very interesting album with all their more powerful successful hits ( Sugar-Photograph-Love Bites) surely a must buy but we miss Too Late For Love...

Wow, this album rocks. I had some of the Def Leppard albums in college, but they wore out. I got this album as a replacement and it is great. All my favorite Def Leppard hits on one album. The recording quality is great. I might have arranged the songs in a different order, but there is not one that I disagree with being on this album. Cranked loud, it shows the greatness of the band (my favorite band is still Pink Floyd, but this band knows how to rock).
