4 out of 5 stars Wow.... Absolutely beautiful! A musical journey!   March 3, 2008

I'll be up front & say that I'm not not a huge operatic metal/rock fan, but I am pleasantly surprised by this CD. Back when I first listened to Nightwish years ago, I didn't get into them as much at that time, but years later after hearing Tarja Turunen was going solo I was actually curious to see what direction she would go into musically. Well here we are & it seems that she went a little more into the operatic side of rock but I surprisingly really dig this sound. Normally I would want more metallic sounding songs & less operatic vocals, but here Tarja actually delivers less metallic songs but her vocals aren't as intense like when she was in Nightwish so I think the music is more pleasing to the ear. This is definitely one of those CDs to listen to if you just want to float away from the craziness in your mind & let the music sooth you. Give it a listen, you might actually like it.

5 out of 5 stars The angel spreads her wings...   June 13, 2008

Tarja is finally free and ready to take wings. After her departure from Nightwish,I'd been waiting anxiously for her solo album and there we have it.
This woman has a way of taking you somewhere else with her angelic yet powerful voice.I've never seen anyone who can convey and pass emotions the way Tarja does.Musically, this album is very dark and beautiful.I was surprised by the Alice Cooper's Poison cover, but in a very good way!

Whether you're a classical fan,a rock fan or a metal fan, you'll find something in this album that will get you.But don't expect the Nightwish-sound,remember that Nightwish is Tuomas' musical vision, not Tarja's.

3 out of 5 stars Another missed opportunity   June 20, 2008

The split between Tarja and her former band Nightwish was as public as it was bitter, so I won't dwell on that, save to say that I had high hopes for both parties. Sometimes these splits do in fact work well for everyone concerned (see Helloween/Gamma Ray and Angra/Shaman). Unfortunately that wasn't the case for Tarja's former bandmates in Nightwish. Instead of recruiting one of the readily available "opera metal" singers to take Tarja's place, they wasted what would otherwise have been their most epic and ambitious album with a singer (Annette Olzon) who was painfully inexperienced and out of her league. I was hoping that my disappointment with Dark Passion Play would be alleviated by My Winter Storm, but sadly that was not the case.

My Winter Storm could have been a triumph. Tarja's voice is in terrific shape, she assembled a solid backing band, and the symphonic elements that made Nightwish so appealing are in place. Unfortunately the album is, well, boring. It lacks anything remotely resembling a pulse. You hear the electric guitars kick in and start thinking "oh yeah, this is where it's going to start to rock", and then...nothing. The song ends. Imagine if every song on Once sounded exactly like "Creek Mary's Blood" and you'll get a feel for My Winter Storm. I realize Tarja probably wanted to distance herself from Nightwish, and that's understandable, but trying to suddenly become Sarah Brightman has the potential to alienate a huge group of the people who made her a household name (in Finland) in the first place. There are a handful of beautiful songs on this album ("I Walk Alone" is terrific), but by and large My Winter Storm just seems like another missed opportunity from the Nightwish breakup.

Oh, and as much as I love a creative cover song, Tarja's version of the Alice Cooper hit "Poison" is an absolute disaster. It literally makes my ears hurt.

Ultimately Nightwish fans lost out twice. Nightwish is no longer what it was, and Tarja's solo material is nowhere near what it could have been. It's a shame, but I guess we'll always have Once.

NOTE: The US version of My Winter Storm has a lower retail price and a pair of live bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Tarja !   April 24, 2008

I just became aquainted with Nightwish - Tarja since the Once album. Nightwish's new album with Anette is good, but I have to give credit to Tarja for this album. Where I was left with wanting something a bit more on the new NW album, Tarja delivers. With a couple of listen-throughs, this album gets even better.

4 out of 5 stars My Winter Storm...not quite Nightwish, but very good...   June 28, 2008
Amy S. Guenther (Girard, KS USA)
Tarja's solo effort is a very good one indeed. Though it is not as heavy as any Nightwish, it is excellent just the same. Her hypnotic voice pulls you right into each and every song. However, I would love to see her get back together with Nightwish. The chemistry they had together, when performing, is the only thing that is lacking with her new band. In my opinion, this cd was definately worth purchasing.
