In celebration of Beastie Boys' 24th anniversary, Capitol Records has decided to pay tribute to Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "Adrock" Horovitz and Adam "MCA" Yauch-- known collectively as Beastie Boys, with the release of Solid Gold Hits. (No, the group is not breaking up.) The infomercial-worthy 15-track compendium distills the NYC trio's storied career into an ADD-friendly digest format: Covering the Boys' first platinum-mining expeditions with "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" and "Fight For Your Right" through west coast detours "Shake Your Rump," "So What'cha Want" and "Sabotage," up to last year's return to #1 with the million-plus-selling To The 5 Boroughs' "Ch-Check It Out," "An Open Letter To NYC" and "Triple Trouble" -and all points between.

4 out of 5 stars Great Songs, Crappy Package   November 13, 2005

I'm a self-proclaimed casual Beastie Boys fan. I used to have all their albums, owned a few shirts, and I've seen them live a couple of times. But it finally dawned on me that I never actually listened to the CDs!

So I ditched the albums & bought the Sounds of Science when that came out... but then I never listened to that either! Too much filler material (face it: the stuff from Some Old Bulls**t & Aglio E Olio just sucks). It didn't take long to ditch that anthology, too. So I picked up Solid Gold hits upon its release.

The song selection is much tighter & more convenient for the casual fan who just wants all the hits (including the To The 5 Boroughs material). And the cover is pretty awesome (I think I've always been drawn to their style more than their actual music). But the album package itself stinks! It's packaged in one of those cardboard cases with a platic tray to hold the disc. It looks like a CD single! And what's worse is that there is NO booklet to accompany the CD! All there is are song credits found in the area underneath the disc.

A hits package with no notes or anything? Lame. Made me kind of wish I held on to Sounds of Science. But if you're just here for the music & music only, Solid Gold Hits is a good way to go.

4 out of 5 stars It's what'cha want.   November 8, 2005

My thinking is, this collection was made exclusively for the brand-new Beastie Boys fan, or the person who just never got anything of theirs yet. I say that because they also have out a 42 track 2-disc anthology from 1999, and because who doesn't have this stuff already? And, shouldn't the single disc collection come out before the 2-disc one? However, this is short and to the point, and is a simple hits album for those that only want the biggest hits. 15 cuts including "Fight For Your Right To Party", "Hey Ladies", "Pass The Mic", "Sabotage", "Intergalactic", and "Ch-Check It Out". It's just two or three tracks from each album, and nothing new. Hence, "Solid Gold Hits". This is also available with a DVD of videos. Gotta love the cover photo.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but...   November 14, 2005

Don't be a cheapskate, buy Sounds of Science instead--you will not regret it. What you get with Sounds of Science but not with this:

-Hit songs:

"Slow and Low"
"Gratitude"
"Alive"
"The Negotiation Limerick File"
"She's On It"
"Remote Control"

-Countless really high-quality rarities, awesome instrumentals and hilarious joke songs, as well as lesser-known (but just as good) album tracks.

-Terrific packaging and liner notes.

-A well-rounded view of the Beasties' 20 year career.

The point is, you don't have to be a hardcore fan to want more material than this Solid Gold Hits offers. Sounds of Science was the first thing I ever bought by the Beastie Boys, and it was so good I ended up going out to buy most of the original albums. They are talented enough to warrant a double album best-of, so don't settle for this--get S.O.S.

1 out of 5 stars i don't own this...   November 8, 2006

..and what's the point? All of these songs (minus a few) are on the anthology, along with countless others. The Beastie Boys didn't put this out, their record label did. It's just way for corporate to make money. If you consider yourself a real Beastie Boys fan, that is you're interested in all the other music they made that wasn't put on radio, then don't buy this. If you occasionally heard them on the radio and Fight For Your Right is your favorite song, then go ahead. The Beastie Boys are much more than just their greatest hits. To fully appreciate them, you have to listen to an album all the way through.

I bought 'The Sounds of Science' when it came out some years back, but it was just too much material to wade through... then it hit me: I'm a casual fan!
Hence, 'Solid Gold Hits' is pefect for someone like me. I've heard about a dozen of these songs on the radio and am very happy with this collection! If you're a casual fan, you'll be happy with this set as well... thanks, Boys!
