5 out of 5 stars Best By Far. Well worth the extra money.   March 15, 2006

This is all a compass should be. It has a split mirror with a slot for viewing, rather than just a black line. The slot is easier to see than the black lines on other mirrors in low light. You can sight through the slot, like a lensatic compass. It also has a notch under the mirror with its own luminous pointer. The notch affords a little wider field of view than the slot, and of course, the regular open sight on top of the lid is like all the others, offering the widest field of view, but perhaps less accuracy. It is the best of all worlds. It also has a magnifying lens that is recessed to avoid map scrapes.

The only thing it lacks is a lens for precision viewing, but that is not really necessary unless you are calling in artillery or air support.

And, of course, it has all the usual fine Ranger features, too. The small price increase for the Ultra Ranger over the regular Ranger or its clones is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and simple to use   January 22, 2005

I use the Ranger Ultra on my Geocaching.com hikes. The compass is simple to use. Setting the declination is a matter of looking at your local USGS quad map or going online and finding out what the declination (the difference between true North and Magnetic North) is and use the included screwdriver to set it.

Using the map scales is straightforward, although I note that I use 1:24000 maps and that is not included on the compass I have. The side scales for inch/metric are easy to use.

The magnifier is a nice little touch, handy when trying to see small print on anything, maps, watches, whatever.

Using the compass to take a sighting is a breeze, mostly due to the slit in the mirror. Set what bearing you are looking for to the white mark on the baseplate, align the red portion of the arrow with the red outline on the compass base ("red in the shed") and sight through either the slit or over the top to see what is at that bearing. The reverse is done to figure your position on a map using two or more points and then figuring where you are.

The mirror also serves a secondary function as a signal mirror, although I have fortunately never needed it for that purpose.

The lanyard is sturdy and the slide adjustment is easy to use.

The inclinometer is useful if you're like me and like to know just how much you are abusing yourself on a hilly hike.

It's worth the money, if you're looking for a compass that's easy to use and has many features for a very reasonable price, this is it.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
