If you buy this you better buy the service plan and a backup tiller. February 11, 2007 Troy D. Hall (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Tines quit working first day I used the tiller. I purchased the 2 year plan but there is no telling how long it will before I can use it or how far I will have to drive to get it fixed. I was using it today because I need it today. Not one month from now.
Somewhat disappointed with the quality, design, and operation as a cultivator. June 24, 2007 Frank Jerome 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased the Poulan HDF 550 when the engine went kaput on my inherited 40+ years old 3hp Simplicity Roticul front tine tiller. I used it 10+ years as a 12" wide cultivator (I use a larger rear tine tiller before planting and after harvest). Following are the pros and cons for the Poulan as a 12 3/4" cultivator: Pros: A. Bargain price. B. Stirs up the soil almost as good as the old Simplicity Roticul. C. Nice basic Briggs & Stratton engine, 1 pull start, plenty of power. Cons:: A. I found the Poulan machine extremely difficult to handle when the rotating tines are sometimes touched to the ground to help propel the machine to the garden or the next row. The shaking is severe because right and left inner tines (as shown in the operator's manual pages 12 & 13) are in alignment with each other resulting in 4 tine hits to the ground per revolution acting like a square wheel. The Simplicity has right and left inner tines offset 45 degrees from each other, resulting in 8 tine hits to the ground per revolution acting like a octagon shaped wheel (much more like a round wheel). I found that the Simplicity tine arrangement can be duplicated on the Poulan by ignoring the manual. Instead, convert the Poulan to a 12 3/4" cultivator by first removing 3 tines - the left outer tine, right outer tine, and right inner tine. Then, reinstall the right outer tine with the hub to the outside and use the pin hole that locates the right tine the same distance from the transmission as the distance the left inner tine is located from the transmission. Now the Poulan is much easier to handle (4 or more times less shaking) when using tines to help propel the machine. PROBLEM SOLVED! B. The tines rotate too fast for cultivating close to plants. Soil is thrown on plants when tines are closer than 9"away (even at low engine speed). C. The Poulan has 8" wheels compared to 10" wheels on the Simplicity. The 2" smaller wheels make pushing or pulling the Poulan to the garden or next row much more difficult at times. D. The Poulan machine is very wobbly on wheels because of the loose fit of the height adjustment in addition to the flexing of the supporting frame which doesn't seem robust enough for the weight of the machine. E. Afraid that chintzy plastic clutch lever assembly on the handle bar may soon break (other brand machines have metal assembly). F. The Poulan has cheap handle grips that easily slide off.
Great Front Tine Tiller June 20, 2007 G. W. Simpson I ordered the Poulan Front Tine Tiller on June 10th and received it on June 19, 2007. The assembly instructions were very easy to follow. I put gas in it and it started on the first pull. If you follow the operating instructions it performs great. Most people go full throttle in hard ground and get bounced all over the place. Follow the instructions and allow the tiller to do the work and you will be very happy! I'm tall and found that the handle can be raised and it works great for me. I definitely recommend this tool.
Great for the price September 25, 2007 Yungman A. Liu I use this tiller twice. I have not use any other tillers before. I cannot compare between tillers. I found it to be easy to handle. It get the job done, it was not hard on me at all. I am sure the rear tine tiller is suppose to be "better". Check their price and you will come back to this. I got this on sale for $299 and free shipping from Amazon. I cannot ask for more. The motor is plenty powerful, my yard has not been tilled since---forever---, it is like rock. In fact I went and check the Craftsman rear tine tiller that cost about $500 if it goes on sale, it use the exact same motor: Brigg and Straton #126302.( forget all the fancy series names ). For weekend warrior like me with only about 5000sqft yard, I'll buy this one all over again. I am very happy with Amazon's service, there are some complication on the product which Amazon resolve nicely. It is too long to write about it, bottom line--I am very happy.
