Too Much to Go Haywire May 1, 2008 K. Yarber (Santa Clarita, CA) 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
I bought this mower barely 2 years ago. Price was right and the reviews seemed acceptable. The model that can be sold in California is 10686 (because of smog control laws) But after using it apprx. 9 months, the electric start system fizzled. First, I thought it was the 40 amp fuse blew or the cheap Chinese battery failed; so I bought another cheap Chinese battery from another online source, along with a battery charger. Installed the new battery; mower would not start. Forced to use the manual recoil starter which I hate to do - that's why I spent the extra money to get the electric starter. The recoil starter cord broke yesterday after being used apprx. 13 months. I tried to repair the Chinese recoil starter but was not able to take the thing apart. Not having an "authorized" Lawnboy service center near, I turned it over to a friend of mine who is a lawn mower repairer. I asked him if he knew why the engine runs for apprx. 5 minutes, then stops. He said take off the gas cap, the air breather washer probably is missing. It was! He said he'd replace that. Lawnboy's Owner's Manual provides no "troubleshooting" repair procedures and several "authorized" serviceman would not reveal anything over the phone. I thought I'd bought a good reliable mower. If you insist on getting a Lawnboy, forget the electric starter, and get the model that has a clutch that stops the blade while the engine still runs while you empty the tiny grass catcher because you have to continually restart the engine. The starter cord won't stand the strain and I can't either. With all the extra stopping and re-starting, it's just a matter of time when the Tecumseh engine gives up. So, I hope my friend can get a new starter part, or repair the existing one, but then again Lawnboy/Toro does not sell parts on their factory website; you have to go to an "authorized" dealer.
Broken right out of the box! June 4, 2008 GeckoMama (Idaho) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
We ordered this thing next day because it was only $3.99 with Prime and UPS wouldn't deliver it without a signature. That would have been nice to know before we paid extra for onvernight! Then when we got it, it was broken. Amazon won't let us return it to them and the 800 number on it has very limited hours. If I had known what a pain this was going to be, I never would have ordered it online!! Buyers beware!
