VERY High Light Output, VERY High Maintenence Pump May 20, 2008 K. Baker (San Diego, CA) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Issues and Experiences elaborated below 1. Delays in ordering products directly from manufacturer 2. Is the company going to be around in a couple of years?? 3. Growing Roses in the Deluxe Model 4. Light output observations 5. High Maintenance - What to do about the noisy pump? 6. Suggestions to reduce the frequency of rebuilding the pump DELAYS IN SHIPPING PRODUCTS FROM MANUFACTUER I received a "picture" of this in my gift box for Xmas because they were backordered at the time. It took another TWO months for it to come. I've had it now for about 4 months. We bought and installed the roses after they took another 2 weeks to ship... IS THE COMPANY GOING TO BE AROUND IN A COUPLE YEARS? Get this,, aerogarden is offering a 2 for 1 deal now to prior customers?? Makes me wonder if there has been a sales slump, or if that delay over the holiday season hurt them. They now have a little 3 pod compact model for roses. We may do the 2 for 1 for those and then transplant our roses there. Maybe they'll do better? See more on that below. I think I'm going to stockpile bulbs because the recent "sales" offered by the company are making me wary of the future of the product... everything else can be obtained somewhere else. Nutrients? Check - Hydroponic supply. Seeding Plugs? Check - Jiffy Products sold at Home Depot. Seed? Come on now - do they have "special" seeds ?? GROWING ROSES IN THE DELUXE MODEL Once you're set up, timers, plugged in it is a snap to get going. As the product promises, the garden WILL grow. I'm beginning to realize that the roses were a waste of this deluxe model. I want to do the tomatoes, but I really wanted to figure out if it was going to be a worthwhile project first. One concern I have is that the white roses were blooming quite vigorously when we first purchased them. After 4 months, the red ones have never bloomed. I am a quite meticulous and experienced gardener, and this phenomenon has led me to believe that the rose tablets are inferior quality nutrient for roses. Otherwise the plants are quite vigorous, and actually TOO green. I think the Deluxe is putting out way too much light for mini roses. So I have neat little compact rose bushes (a lot of training has to go into taming those red ones, they want to take off). I have mini roses in my garden outside, and they are faring much better. OBSERVATIONS ON THE LIGHT OUTPUT The roses have leaves that are an extremely pale green. This is usually a sign of too much light. I will give the tomatoes a go, but probably from a mosaico variety seed, I think the light output is much more suited to tomatoes. HIGH MAINTENANCE - WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE NOISY PUMP. You know, I was expecting a really low maintenance product, but the pump is quite annoying and high maintenance!! Grainules from those tablets get into the pump, as do root bits, and can make it sound like a hydrolic mining machine!! Ok, I'm exaggerating, but do you know how an extremely noisy fishtank pump sounds? They can do that from time to time, and according to Aerogarden, you must take apart (yes, screwdrivers are involved) and clean it yourself! They didn't mention anything about that in the sales material, did they?? But it is part of the standard maintenance ... don't believe me... here's the link on their website http://www.aerogrow.com/downloads/CleanPumpv4.pdf My gardening never involved screwdrivers before! SUGGESTIONS TO REDUCE THE FREQUENCY OF REBUILDING THE PUMP I'm thinking I may experiment with hydroponic solutions that do not involve particulates to decrease the frequency of taking apart my pump. Additionally, it helps to trail the roots away from the pump intake (over the bars and to the sides) . Little hairy roots can trigger the phenomenom, too. CONCLUSION All in all, I do really like the product mostly because it is much more attractive than most indoor grow systems. That being said, the package price point is quite competitive for the quality; However, you will also be quite limited in what you may grow in it. There are many indoor grow systems, and you have many options. I think I will take advantage of the free market and experiment with the Organic hydroponic nutrient packages. As far as complete grow systems are concerned, this one is A+ fro tidyness of appearance. Overall appearance matters to me the most, the rest of the issues I can work out over time.
I Love, Love, LOVE this product! July 11, 2008 Janet Ann Jenson 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It took me 6 months of studying and apprehension before I got up enough nerve to try this product. I had the first one only two days before ordering the second. A month later I bought my third one, and I'm pretty sure I'll buy three more before this month is over. Noisy? Not mine! They all run as quietly as mice. Yes, they put out a LOT of light. But you can program them to turn off for 8 hours each night if you have a small apartment and are concerned about sleeping. I put other aeroponically grown plants next to my Deluxes to share the light, but I should caution people that the bulbs do have to be replaced on a schedule. If that is a problem, then you won't want this device. We find, however, that with these planters along the bar that separates our kitchen and dining areas, no other lights are needed as the gardens are not only good plant lamps but also double as people lamps. They are full spectrum "happy" lights and give the same pleasant lighting effect that we used to get from our Verilux Happy Lamp, which I might add cost more than the planter and didn't grow plants ;-) I hate dirt and I hate bugs, but I love to eat clean fresh organic food. With the AeroGarden Deluxe you are in control. Yest the seed kits are expensive, but I recommend starting with a few of them to to ensure success on your first couple tries, and then after that you can use your own seeds with the help of the included Master Gardener kit. I think the Aerogarden Deluxe is the best product that AeroGrow makes, and I highly recommend it for anyone. Everything we have tried grows bigger, faster, and more delicious in this contraption. I highly recommend the Deluxe. I am sure the Pro 200 is also a nice planter, but I prefer the white color that is available on the Deluxe. Could you buy ordinary produce at the market for much less than it costs to grow your own in an AeroGarden? Of course! But can you buy microgreens and other select organic product from a market like Whole Foods, that would be comparable to you yield for the same price. No, and that is where the AeroGardens really shine. They are also wonderful for keeping flowering plants in radiant bloom year-round. If you love fresh flowers growing indoors, these gardens pay for themselves there too.

I purchased the Aerogarden Deluxw and have been pleasantly surprised by the results. Pruning encourages continued growth, also the cherry tomatoes did better even when removed from the unit and transplanted into the ground. The unit does not travel well once dismantled and transported from NC to SC the contact became bad and the pump would not work. But because it is so hot in the south and if you don't have time to maintain plants in soil this is the way to go.
The AeroGarden is great! August 30, 2008 Frank Wiley 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is our second AeroGarden. The first one has provided us with an amazing supply of herbs and even some vegetables throughout the year. We are purchasing another one now to increase our crop!
