Amazon.com Review We've come a long way from sweat and a screwdriver. A hundred years ago, builders would never have envisioned a tool as powerful and efficient as this one. Heck, even 20 years ago. Science has ushered battery technology along, and the LXT Lithium-Ion system that powers this impact driver has a ton of advantages over standard NiMH or NiCad batteries. The Lithium-Ion technology means 1,400 battery life cycles, longer run time, lighter weight, a great reduction in the self-discharge rate and built-in shock-absorbing features to protect your battery. But perhaps the coolest innovation is what Makita calls its 45-minute Optimum Charger. It actually talks to the batteries it charges throughout the cycle, using a built-in memory chip in the battery and, believe it or not, a CPU chip in the charger itself, which analyzes the data stored in the battery chip to decide on the best charging method at that time. Slide one of these batteries onto the supremely designed impact driver and you'll be amazed at what you can do. Despite its size (for the record, it's 5-3/4 inches long and weighs barely 3 pounds), this driver kicks out an unbelievable 1,280 in./lbs. of efficient torque, a no-load speed of 2,300 rpm and 3,200 blows per minute, putting it way out in front of the pack. We really like the integrated worklight, too. It illuminates as soon as you pull the trigger, and it stays on for 10 seconds or so after you release the trigger, too - a handy little feature. Makita's always made ergonomically positive tools that feel good in your hand and take the strain off your body, and this one's no exception. The slightly curved grip is so comfortable, and because it's super compact and lightweight, this driver's an absolute pleasure to run. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste What's in the Box Impact driver, two LXT Lithium-Ion 3.0Ah batteries, 45-minute optimum charger, tool case

terrific tool August 4, 2006 Victoria Mihalski (allentown,pa) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
My most often used tool is a cordless drill and my old Makita was wearing out. I have the new Makita Lithium-Ion impact drive for 2 weeks and it is terrific. The weight is less than my old drill. the power is tremendous, the light is a bonus and the battery longevity is great...
Best Impact I have ever owned Use it everyday! December 24, 2006 J. Black 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Four years ago I had a hand crushing injury at work. I'm a manager of a garage door shop and I have to use an impact everyday. My hand would hurt after a long day of using my old makita or dewalt impact. I was so happy when this item was released. It is so much lighter then any of my old impacts. It also does the job. I use it so much daily that I go through 3 batteries a day. I'm not trying to say that the batteries don't have a long life, it is just that I actually use the impact 6-7 hours a day. After 364 days, the impact started to die, the brushes and motor were shot. I was very surprised, I brought the impact to a makita authorized service center and even though it was "very used" for 364 days, they fixed it in less then 24 hours. For one day I had to go back to using my old heavy impact. It was horrible day. I would not live without this impact. I even bought a second one as a back up. Even though the price is higher then some of the other impacts out there (my wife grumbled a little about the cost)I would absolutely recommend this over any other impact on the market!
Power beyond power!! July 27, 2006 B. Martin (Cleveland Hts. , OH) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this impact driver for am upcoming deck project. I have tested it out a few times so far. I installed a bunch of 1/4"x4" lags into studs w/o predrilling and BURIED them so deep as to countersink the hex heads. Oops! Makes them kind of a bear to remove. This thing has oodles of power. But it is great for driving small screws as well. I still am using the residual charge that was in the battery when it arrived, so I haven't got to try out the cool charger with the fan cooling yet. I cannot wait to use it on the deck. You will NOT be dissappointed. I have read in some reviews comments about the noise. While it is noisy, I do not find it noisy enough to really warrant ear protection. Maybe if you were using it for a long period of time ....

My crew killed 2 Bosch drills today- expensive day. We do buildings that reqire a lot of screws. I've not tried the competitors as I'm a fan of Makita, but this driver is great. Quick change of bits, good power although my Bosch 18 had more power. It will occasionally snap a phillips bit, but IT WON'T SPIN and strip out a phillips screw/bit- tremendous! Nut drivers are best if the screws work for you. LED is great as the sun sets, gets you another 1/2 hr of work time. Light- very easy to work over your head and fully extended on a ladder. Impact has not torque so one can extend fully or work off a ladder with no worry of it twisting out of your hand- or worse. 2 hours of constant use driving sheetrock size screws/ 1/2 hr. for a charge. no down time. Pricey!!!! Finally - a place to keep the many various bits, and plenty of room at that. Good belt hook, even better given that it is 1/2 the weight of a similar capable dill. keeps your pants on your hips. That and a free 18 volt drill (no batterys though) Buy one- you won't be disapointed
