Great device February 2, 2008 busrey (Raleigh, NC) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I do trim carpentry and build cabinets and needed something to give me fast accurate measurements for doing crown moldings and the Bosch delivered. It comes with a handy case that you can hang on your belt keeping it in reach. I use it for any measurement that would require me to bend the tape and try to guess what the reading would be or where the distance makes it difficult to accurately do with tape measure. It also has the ability to do continuous reading allowing you to aim at an object and move yourself forward or backward until you are the desired distance from the target object. A steady hand does help but the uses are endless due to its ability to read off its front edge, a tripod mount hole, off its back edge, or its extendable rod. It would be a good idea to make sure the tape measure you use for transferring the measurements matches the rangefinder before starting a job. The only negative I have discovered is that a measurement in feet and fractions of an inch are stored in memory and then redisplayed in decimal forcing me to then convert the number back into fractions. That said the display holds my measurement long enough for me to get my molding, measure, and make the cut before the display shuts off. I have recommended this device to all my friends who do a lot of measurements on their job.
okay- UPDATED January 16, 2008 space kaiser (nj) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
I've only had this a few days and still have to learn some more of the features but the biggest issue i have with it is that there are no levelers on the device. If I am shooting 100', just the slightest angle up or down or side to side will throw off the measurement making it longer. it's hard to see a red dot 100' away and harder to know if it "looks" lined up straight. I guess I don't find this to be as accurate a tool because of this and it's probably good for rough estimating. Hilti makes one that has levelers but I think it's 2x as much. there is a some sort of mark on the top of the case that is supposed to help you align it but it doesn't really solve the problem. you have to hold the thing to your face and sight the laser against this mark. this isn't possible when you are measuring from wall to wall. might as well go with more expensive model if you need that or cheaper if you don't. ** UPDATE- I've had the rangefinder for a few months now and I feel better about it. I haven't been able to test out how inaccurate it becomes without a leveler but it has been very handy and a timesaver overall. PS- I suggest the glasses that help you see the dot better.
Excellent Product May 7, 2008 pg2007 (Massachusetts, USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I will use this tool in locating reference marks related to finding survey benchmarks outdoors. Based on an afternoon's testing, it appears to be effective to about 75 ft. in outside use, which makes it fine for me in typical situations (like measuring distances to reference marks like telephone poles across busy highways) While I wait for the Dewalt targets I ordered to arrive, I tested it out on a standard size traffic cone wrapped with a couple of bands of 4" 3M-type reflective material. This makes the laser beam's dot MUCH easier to detect (looks like a flash of fire). The red-tinted Dewalt laser-enhancing glasses make it about 20% easier for me to detect the beam, although their shape makes them a bit awkward to wear over ordinary eyeglasses. The beam reflected well off of dull fire hydrants and mid-bright telephone poles. It's swallowed up by black materials and whites that are too bright. Almost impossible to detect the beam in full sunlight (but something like the reflective traffic cone makes it possible). The maximum "natural" range I was able to attain was about 110 ft., in dusk conditions, bouncing off a yellow-colored wall. Since there isn't really a sighting mechanism, it's hard to "hit" a target much smaller than 3'x3' at 100 ft. In addition to difficulty tracking the dot, it's hard at long distance to hold it on-target for the 2 sec. or so it takes to compute the range.
missing "Inches only" feature June 7, 2008 P. Mair (Austin, Tx United States) 9 out of 16 found this review helpful
I was very excited to get a electronic tape measure for half the cost of a Hilti. Unfortunately it can not display "inches only", but "calculates feet and inches" combined or metric. I am concerned about making a mental conversion error from 6' 3 9/16" to 75 9/16 and had to return the device without using it. Looks to me a engineer designed this that is not familiar with the standard system. I would hope the next release would add this basic feature.
Terrific measuring tool! February 15, 2008 Bill McCreary (Palmer, AK USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
As a land surveyor I appreciate the compact size, rugged construction and accuracy of this device. It can be used in three measuring modes; metric, feet/inches/fractional inches and decimal feet - which I use for my work. It really does measure to a 1/16th inch. I think Spectra Precision, a manufacturer of survey instruments, makes the DLR165K for Bosch. Spectra Precision makes the same unit with their name on it, in a different color, and calles it the HD50 which sells for $179. The Bosch presently sells through Amazon for $144.46. Specs are the same. Why pay more? I have the Bosch and love it!
