Great little device December 17, 2005 G. Pearson (California) I needed something to shut off the water because I am notorious for forgetting it and overflowing my horse's water troughs. I don't have built in pipes and have both auto waterers and buckets. I turn it on for about an hour twice a day, can see how much water the horses drank before filling it up. It's just what I needed. I've been using it for about 6 months and it's worked flawlessly. I turn down the hose and leave it set to ON when the the temps freeze. Keeps a little trickle of water flow going when I need to.
Inexpensive and Simple. Mine not Reliable after 4 Months August 26, 2005 J. Russell (San Diego, CA United States) This simple no battery timer for auto-shut off of water after a dial-in time period was just what I wanted. No batteries (running water decrements timer) and easy too use (but not as accurate as a battery timed device (one makes their trade-offs). Unfortunately, after about 4 months of use (about every third day) I found it failed to shut off two different times because the spring that forces the shutoff valve to pop-up(off, after the water dials the timer back to its OFF position, is not strong enough on mine. I don't know if this is a common problem with this timer or not, but a serious one if your paying water-bills and depending on a half hour sprinkling to turn into an all day one. I still use it cause it works most of the time. If you buy this, watch it for a while and don't leave it at 'home alone' until it has earned your trust. BTW, the 5200 and 5204 are the same thing. The 4 comes with two 5200 in a single package. Other sprinkler companies make a similar product. Gilmore is one I have some experience with without problems with their stuff.
Low Price but Lacks Accuracy August 9, 2005 M. R. Weaver (Northumberland, PA) I have owned a Raindate water timer for several years. It is very durable, easy to install, and relatively inexpensive. The metal spigot connection is a nice feature as is the ability to mount it to the side of the spigot. The major problem I have found is that the timer is not very accurate. It is only broken down into 1/2 hour increments on the dial although there are other settings which are not marked. Due to these unmarked settings the watering time can be off by as much as 1 hour.
Nelson 5200, looks the same as photo July 11, 2005 Practical Evaluator (San Antonio, TX United States) Easy to set, works as advertized, no batteries. Using timer between two garden hoses with Goodyear ball-valve for flow control inserted after the timer for flow control to sprinkler. Have full sprinkler system but this unit is still very useful for spot watering in problem areas. Do not yet know about long term durability; have had poor results with similar Melnor products.
