Buy replacement batteries yourself. November 7, 2007 W. Jiang (Maryland) 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
The Petsafe RFA-188 can be DIY replaced by opening up the bottom cap. It is glued so you'll have to use a plier. Underneath it you'll find a Sanyo CR-1/3N battery that can be purchased online for 3 dollars. I plan on buying a bunch in bulk to make shipping worth it, slap it in and use some glue or tape to put it back together. To find the inner Battery, just google it.
This is what it looks like but you can find it cheaper elsewhere on the internet.

CHANGE THE BATTERY YOURSELF FOR 3 BUCKS! June 5, 2009 pronoman 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
OK, so scrolling through the reviews here there are endless 1-star, "the battery dies in a month reviews". No kiddin! We saw it the first, second, third, fourth, etc... Time! I had a Petsafe collar with a red blinking light... I took out the Petsafe battery and figured out what needed to be done to replace it within a minute, so can you. When you remove the battery, the positive terminal (silver top of the battery with a "+" on it) will have a plastic ring around it that holds the battery in the holder. If you look carefully, you will see a couple of tabs and a seam that runs around the top lip. Just use a small screwdriver, or pocket knife to pry this ring off. It will break off...No matter - it was only glued on to begin with. Now get a pair of needle-nose pliers and grab gently along the side of the battery (where metal is exposed on the sides)... It may take a tiny bit of force to pull out, but it came right out for me. Now install a new Sanyo (or other brand) CR-1/3N battery (I picked one up at WalMart for $3.OO) by pressing it back in. You don't need to worry about gluing anything, it will hold just fine and will be that much easier to remove next month when it dies again. Now plug that joker back in and you're GTG. Petsafe makes a great product, but they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to sell this battery off as proprietary - BS!! Good Luck!
Lasts only about 1 month March 9, 2007 Joann Denbow (Raleigh, NC) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I use this battery for a dog collar from PetSafe. The first time I used the battery and it went dead within a month I just replaced it thinking it was a bad battery. The second one went dead in about a month as well. I wrote an e-mail to PetSafe and they said that was about right. They said the collar was meant as a training device only. The problem is that I have a very smart dog and when his batter goes dead he knows because the hidden wire no long makes his collar click and he goes running into the street. $9 a pop for the replacement batter makes this collar pretty expensive. It owuld have been cheaper to build a fence.
Bad Product! April 11, 2007 D. Borland (Union, KY United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased a "little Dog" radio fence from Petsafe and the fence is excellent, but the "little dog" collars are eating up batteries. The collars nice and small but if I get 3 weeks from one of these batteries then I am lucky. DO NOT BUY the little dog collars!
Yes, Replace it Yourself January 18, 2010 Southern Gentleman 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Following advice from other reviewers, I took the module apart and removed the battery. I'm not a handy person but there was nothing to it. I just ordered six replacement batteries online for less than what Petsafe charges for two. Considering how fast they burn out, buying them for my two cats from petsafe would cost me over $100 a year. This way it will be less than $35.
