Product Description 3-pack of cat litter cartridges lasts up to 90 days. If you use the Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box you already appreciate not having to scoop, clean, or refill your cat's litter for weeks at a time. Replace the touch-free litter box's cat litter with a Scoop Free Replacement Litter Cartridge, which is filled with 30 days' worth of Fresh Step crystal litter. This set includes three Replacement Litter Cartridges. Replacing the existing cartridge is easy. Just slide the sanitary cartridge into the Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box and reattach the waste cover. The Scoop Free Replacement Litter Cartridge absorbs odor and moisture on contact, and after your cat leaves the litter box, the ultra-quiet Scoop Free automatically rakes the waste into a covered trap, leaving the litter bed smelling clean and fresh. The Scoop Free Replacement Litter Cartridge uses disposable litter tray cartridges filled with Fresh Step crystal litter, which stops odors significantly better than clay litter. Just change the disposable litter cartridge every 20 to 30 days (10 to 15 days for two cats) and toss the old cartridge away without seeing, touching, or smelling messy waste.

Awesome -- cheaper if you refill it yourself March 20, 2007 M. Chen (San Diego, CA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
So the big question I had when purchasing this system was whether or not I could lower my cost by refilling with crystals I buy at Wal-Mart. As a graduate student, I really don't have the money to buy cartidges every couple of weeks (I've got two cats). This review is basically here to tell you that I've done it, and it works for me. YMMV. As a first attempt, I simply threw away the old crystals and poo, and then filled it up with ~4 lbs. of fresh step crystals purchased at Wal-Mart (~$[...] for an 8-lb bag or two refills). Problem #1: Wet Cardboard. This is a documented problem with the system, as noted in reviews for the litter box, but I basically could only get two uses out of the cardboard box before the cat claws could pierce the bottom and cause soaking of the box in urine. Solution #1: There is no solution for the wet box problem, unless you can tolerate an impressively disgusting urine stench. Luckily, Scoop Free improved their cartridge systems! Note that new cartridges come with a slight change to the cartridge that has improved its sturdiness. They have added a plastic sheet to the bottom of the cartridge to prevent cat claws from piercing the bottom and having the pee soak through to the bottom. Great! Problem solved, right? Well, I then started experiencing Problem #2: a screeching noise during the raking that really sounded quite awful. At first I thought this was my fault, possibly overfilling the box and causing the machinery to operate with too much litter. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that as the cats continued to use this cartridge (with plastic sheet), their claws would occassionally get under the plastic sheet and lift it up, causing litter to get underneath the plastic sheet. This plastic sheet would bulge up at the sides, and the raking mechanism would then start scraping the plastic surface as it raked, causing the screeching sound. Solution #2: Now, for each new cartridge I use (I still use a new cartridge after about 2 or 3 refills), I use mailing tape (or duct tape) to tape down the edges of the plastic sheet. This takes some practice, but I have not experienced any screeching noises since. Anyways, I hope this review helps! I also find this 3-pack to be great because it qualifies for amazon prime 2-day service. Thanks, Amazon!
No...No for LARGE Cats! August 2, 2006 C. Fiore (Richmond,VA) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I love this sytem and the idea is wonderful but if you have a LARGE cat forget about it. I have a small cat and a LARGE Maine Coone. If you know about cats... he's big! The smaller one does fabulous with this system. The larger will reject it after the cartridge has been used a few days. I then find things on the floor. It fills up rather quickly with the two cats especially one being so LARGE. If you intend to use this with one cat go for it. You'll love it. If there's more than one or a larger size cat you'll be replacing cartridges constantly and racking up the litter bill.
Strangely and immediately irresistable to my cats. September 15, 2006 Chandra Auberry (with much to be modest about) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My cats are large - just not Maine Coon large. As far as ordinary domestic cat size, two of my five cats are large. And consequently, I go through the cartridges faster than 2/15 days . The cartridges are expensive and the cartridges get *soggy*. Even so, I rate this highly because my cats immediately adapted to using this system without *mistakes.* There is *no* odor or fragrance! I also discovered great relief in ridding my house and myself of the heavy bags of litter and the scattering messes I, the cats, and the hole-y bags had always made. Place a sheet of cardboard under the cartridge until Scoop Free fixes the soggy problem.
not what it is cracked up to be... May 6, 2007 L. J. Hector (California) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This product, in theory, is a great idea. The problems keeping it from being a good investment are: 1) The initial investment cost too much. 2) The cartridges NEVER last 30 days.....very misleadimg. I have yet to find anyone, with just one normal cat, that can go more than 2 weeks without having to change the cartridges. 3) The claim for the cartridge being environmentally friendly is a hoax, especially considering you have to change it 2-3 times quicker than they claim. 4) How can it claim to be hands-free if they suggest you stir the crystals around to make them last longer. Even that doesn't help them to last as long as the 30 day claim If they wanted to make an environmentally friendly product like they claim, and one that would be reasonably affordable, they would create a box that lasts more than just a couple of weeks, and sell the crystals at a civilized price. If you purchase this, be prepared to spend AT LEAST $45 A MONTH, PLUS SHIPPING. I am thinking of going back to the Litter Maid.
Perfect August 9, 2007 T. Burger (Chicago) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have three cats. Two females, and a male. When I bought this unit and started using the cartridges, the oldest female was 13. There was an adopted male that was 1, and a female rescue cat (horribly set upon by mange and god knows what else during the three months she spent in the alley before we rescued her), who was also about 1. I was concerned that the alley cat would have issues adapting to a new box. She did not - even though she absolutely *hated* the male cat and did whatever she could to avoid him. But she used the same litter box that he did. Almost two years later, she still hisses at the male cat and acts tough with him (he still thinks she's playing, the dork; he has no idea that she wants him roasting over a firepit like a stuck pig and considers his attempts to play an act of war), but she still shares the same litter box. This was a godsend. If you have problems with the litter or the unit, be sure to call the company first before abandoning it. I noticed one reviewer here who did that, and the solution to their problem was very simple and quick. EDIT 9/29: The price for this item continues to climb. For a while it was around $70, then $80, now it's nearly $100. This system is becoming more and more popular, so it would stand to reason that the price should be dropping. Go figure.
