Excellent, space-saving, alternative to larger and longer bulbs August 8, 2007 T. Hada (New Jersey) Yes this gives good enough UVB for your friendly chelonian. This bulb can be used in standard clamp lamps that have a ceramic holster. It runs at only 28 watts so don't expect it to be a good basking lamp on it's own. It's more of a supplement to your regular incandescent. The nicest treat, I think, is that it's self ballasted; so you won't have any other expensive equipment to buy other than the clamp lamp. Anyway, the point is... If you have a setup that involves you being unable to install the larger more traditional fluorescent lamp covers and you want UVB lighting for your reptile this is an excellent alternative.
This product is normally around 20.00, not 81.00! September 9, 2007 Veronica K. Shadow (Armpit, California) I noticed that the ad lists the normal retail price of this item as being over $80.00. Not true. It is normally around $17-25.00. Besides, the 5.0 UVB bulb while being good for most tropical reptiles, is not sufficient for bearded dragons who require the 8.0 UVB or higher. They only last for 6 months at optimum UVB levels before needing replacement. It will still work, but won't be good for your pet after that time. It is a good bulb, not the best, but the best for the money. If you need a better bulb that lasts longer the megaSBray and other sodium mercury vapor bulbs have been recommended to me by breeders, etc. but I haven't bought one yet due to expense.
