 Great Program for simple small businesses January 25, 2006

I am an artist, and once I got out of school I bought Quickbooks Pro. That program never got used because it was way too complicated for my business. When I switched to Simple Start I knew I had found my program. It has all the features I want and very few that I can't use. The graphics table makes it very easy to open your program and click the icon of where you want to go. Everything is very easy, and most actions are intuitive. I keep track of all my accounts -checking, savings, taxes, and credit card accounts. In just one click I can get my profit and loss statement for the month, quarter, or the past year. I have a much better hold on where my money is going and can see expense reports that tell me where I'm spending my money. I can print invoices out of the program and they are automatically reported and I can get a message when the invoice is overdue to make sure and follow up. I know that this is what accounting programs are supposed to do, but I've tried Quicken, Money, and Quickbooks Pro with no real luck. Simple Start is the one program I'm working with now that I know I will stick with. The only reason I give it 4 out of five stars instead of 5 is that there are a few tasks that are a bit counterintuitive to me, like recording an invoice and then having to deposit it into an account as a second task instead of it automatically doing it for you. There are reasons that someone would not want this to be automatic, so it is not a big problem. I also would like the invoices to be more customizeable, but I hear that this version does a better job at that. Overall I recommend this program highly and recommend it to friends all the time. It is perfect for artists and photographers, Ebay vendors, Flea Market vendors, performers...anyone who works freelance without employees.

This program is terrible to deal with. I run a small business and bought QuickBooks Simple Start. Once loaded and you go to use the program there is a pop up requiring you have an Administrator. When loading the software it does not tell you to select or bypass the Administrator requirement. You only learn this when you first go to use the program. The URL they give on the pop up for troubleshooting does not address this issue, either. You are just locked out of the program. Now it gets fun. So, you have to speak to them for help. But this is where it gets to be no laughing matter. To get help you have to email them to ask for help. They then call you back at their convenience. If you are busy working when they call back you have to start all over. I have yet to be able to use this product since I bought it 3 weeks ago because they will not call back when it is convenient for me the customer and will not let me call in at my covenience. Even worse, since they have bought out all their competitors QuickBooks customer support no longer is available after regular hours when a small business owner has the time to handle such operations issues. I can't return this product for a refund because I have loaded it. My first clue to how not user friendly this product is should have been the title: Simple Start.

I'm sure it's a good product for beginners, but I already had an older version of Quickbooks (from 1995) and the only way I could export/import the old data into a newer version of Quickbooks was with QB Pro. Simple Start doesn't allow you to import data from older versions.

If you are looking for a very simple bookkeeping package, this is for you. You don't need to know the difference between a debit and a credit, just click the picture for what you want and it puts the information in the right place. But as an accountant looking for an inexpensive package for a small home business, I found it confusing. When you know where you want your debits and credits, it is hard to find the right forms. You have to do a lot of hunting and some make shift entries.
NOTE: No place to keep track and adjust inventories.
Overall, a good product for the price and what it does.

I just recently started my small business, and so purchased this edition. It installed easily, works great and the price was good too. Unless you are in Retail or have employees, I haven't found better bank for my buck!!
The only problem I had was that the Market Place Seller I purchased it from sent me the 'Limited Edition' Be careful of this. This is a free version from Intuit and has serious limitations. That said, Amazon Customer Service were very responsive, offered a refund, and my 'Full' simple start version is now on the way. Thanks AMAZON!!
