I like Norton AV - I just shoulda updated my 2005 version instead October 28, 2005 Forznoles (Oxford, FL USA) 117 out of 136 found this review helpful
I always use Norton AV on my computer, so I'm a fan of it. I was torn this year between just paying the $30 for updating my Norton 2005 for a year, or buying the new NAV 2006. Well, I wound up buying NAV 2006, as it said it has anti-spyware now, even though it was a few dollars more than just buying another year on last year's NAV. Well, I run both Spybot and Ad-aware on my computer regularly, and I haven't seen any decrease in the number of items they find! I thought with NAV 2006 keeping spyware off my computer, Ad-aware and Spybot wouldn't find anything anymore - I was wrong. My advice - just spend the $30 to update last year's version online - paying even a little extra for this year's version isn't worth it.
AV 2006 intallation and registration problems November 2, 2005 B. C. Dutcher (Waterloo, NY) 90 out of 106 found this review helpful
I have installed it, removed it and re-installed it. It finally said the product was activated. but it was not as the subscription was marked as expired before I began. By calling an 800 number I was finally able to get an unlock key and the activation/subscription issue was resolved. It has never managed to register the product key on their server. I tkeeps sayning cant do that now try again later. If you allow it to scan for some of the things other than virus, worms, adware and spyware, it get hung up in scanning the _Restore directory. Some of their earlier products were more user friendly.
Norton IS a virus - worst computer product ever April 4, 2006 ocbizlaw (Mission Viejo, California USA) 26 out of 28 found this review helpful
The worst software - EVER. I wish there was a zero star rating. Antivirus keeps telling me to renew even though I have six months left on my subscription. When I use the dialog box to report that my subscription is active (or even to renew) and endless stream of browsers to Symantec open. Symantec charges you for telephone support but online live chat "support" is free. Once you explain the problem to Raji, he will tell you to go through a series of steps that you have already tried. Unfortunately, those steps require you to reboot, you lose your connection to Raji, and the problem remains. So you log on again and get Shaktar. Shaktar insists you go through the same exact process that Raji required. Eventually, if you don't kill yourself first, you learn to cut, paste and save your chats so you don't have to retype the whole thing. At this point you're thinking, erroneously, that the next Indian you chat with will see that you have already tried the scripted response twice (or more) and come up with a different suggestion. But no, even after reading that you have already gone through the same process three times, Narayan insists that he cannot help you unless you do the same thing again. I am now trying to remove every remnant of Norton Antivirus which I now consider to BE a virus.
Please do not buy this product! November 7, 2005 NoMore Norton (USA) 25 out of 30 found this review helpful
A friend of mine was having trouble with their PC (computer would reboot during startup continually, relatively new PC). After doing a full HD format, XP reinstall (including all updates) everything worked fine. However, after installing Norton 2006 Antivirus the computer slowed down considerably and after two-three startup / shutdown sequences would begin to reboot during startup again (i.e. never get to the Start menu). I reinstalled XP three times (plus did hardware diagnostic checks). Norton 2006 has to have some bugs in it as XP runs fine until Norton 2006 is installed. I concluded that the problem was Norton as I shut off the AV monitoring through msconfig and the computer worked fine. There were no errors when I installed the product. I did a final reformat etc. but put on a competitor's antivirus product and now have no problems at all. I have been using Norton products for 10 years and been working with PC's for over 20. I had installation issues with Systemworks 2005 but stuck with the product. Once I saw the problems with Norton 2006 (thankfully not on my PC) I took Norton off my own computer and switched to something else (with one month left on my subscription). Don't waste your time with this, there are other options that work.
Given a Choice between this product and a virus .... TAKE THE VIRUS!!! December 3, 2005 B. Breen (Sterling, VA USA) 25 out of 30 found this review helpful
I bought this product before checking the reviews. I figured Norton was a primary player so their product must be good, right? WRONG!!! I've wasted several hours trying to get this product to load and to activate. I finally figured it would be better to unload and take my loss, learn my lesson and find a company with a product that can handle the "tough" elements of allowing the people who paid you their money to actually install it. Call customer support? Only if you want to pay them $29.95 to help you install their product. What a deal! Just imagine some one in dark sunglasses walking around your home saying, "Hey, that's a nice computer you have there .... be a shame if anything were to happen to it, wouldn't it?" So it took me a while, but I learned my lesson. We all make mistakes, and buying this without researching the abundant warnings available as to how badly Symantec and Norton have slipped in customer service and quality product is just another lesson in life to be learned. I figured I'll just unload this and take my losses. Again, wrong. The program wouldn't even uninstall right. It took me 30 minutes to find a separate unistall routine on Symantic to remove this AntiVirus "Virus." This is the first time I've ever felt the need to give a product 1 star. I don't like complaining. Here, I gladly make an exception. I can't stress it strongly enough. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!! You'll be sorry! Do your research. As you can see here and if you search the web, this is a product that has caused more frustration and is more useless than a transistor potato. BEWARE!!
