Good, but Marine Aquarium is MUCH better. July 25, 2006 Steven A. Godun (North Brunswick, NJ) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is not a bad screen saver but if you're looking for a really authentic fish experience, there are better alternatives. The fish, particularly the smaller ones, don't render very well when they're perpendicular to the viewer (that is, when they're swimming towards or away from you). I've even seen them completely disappear. It's very apparent that the fish are basic models with simple photographic skins mapped to them; compared to the much more detailed fish in the SereneScreen Marine Aquarium, the shapes and motion of the fish are downright primitive. Although this is an OS X screen saver (NOTE: there's an Intel updater available for download), it doesn't follow OS X screen saver rules. To change the settings you have to launch a separate application rather than go through the OPTIONS button in the screen saver preferences. One interesting feature is the ability to follow the motion of a single fish; unfortunately I was unable to figure out how to STOP following the motion of a single fish. The only way I could get out of it was to change the tank configuration. Performance is mediocre at best; while I can easily get a dozen fish comfortably and smoothly swimming around with SereneScreen's Marine Aquarium (which has more complex structures and better detail) on my dual 2GHz G5 (with 4GB RAM and a 512MB video card), after six or seven fish I start to see jumping frames in AquaZone. Additionally, the fish don't always behave realistically; tetras, for example, school almost all the time, while in AquaZone they often behave like pretty much any fish, randomly swimming wherever it can go. Another gripe: The program limits your ability to customize the tank. While I understand the physiological requirement to not mix fresh and saltwater (or shallow and deep water) fish, this isn't a physical world. If I want my coelacanth to swim next to my neon tetra, or if I want my blacktip shark to have at a school of dwarf gourami, the program shouldn't stop me -- yet it does. I know that's a lot of negative so here's some positive: There are lots of fish and tank options, including some designed for wide-screen machines which are pretty interesting. The assortment of fish is very interesting, ranging from common freshwater favorites (goldfish, etc) to sea turtles, sharks and an assortment of jellyfish. (MISSING: Starfish, shrimps, crabs, and other crustaceans.) I also like the ability to add more fish and aquarium enhancements (toys, etc) to the show, although I think it's kind of greedy that you have to pay for them. If the quality of the fish/animation was better I would be more inclined to buy more, but not at this level.
Delightful and realistic Virtual Aquarium January 13, 2006 J. Michael Birch (Cardiff, CA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I received this as a gift and I am very impressed with the quality compared to other PC screen-saver aquariums I have seen. You may also see it used as a demo in stores that sell PCs. The fish are highly realistic in the way they move as well as the 3D graphics. Watching fish move in and out of the gently waving tentacles of a sea anemone is almost as fascinating as the real thing. There is also a FishCam mode from a fish POV. You can select different aquariums and then add one or more fish from a selection of about 40. The choice of aquarium effects the choice of fish. Additional fish can be purchased online. If you have an older PC this program may not work well for you. The requirements include "3D graphics acceleration and support for DirectX 8.1". Also, I have not found a way to display the aquarium across multiple monitors. It would be great to see fish swim from one monitor over to the other.
Didn't work and they don't care March 18, 2006 A. T. Harris 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had to return this product. I have a newer G5 iMac with all OS X updates and as a program it worked. But if you buying this for a sreensaver, like I did, the product didn't work. I tried emailing and posted a question on Allume forum, got no response.
Great Time Waster June 27, 2006 D. Greenbaum (Lawrence, KS) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every once in a while a product comes along that does one thing, and does it really well. The only question is "do you need it" With modern LCD screens and sleep/energy save modes, screen savers are virtually unnecessary. That's really the point of Aquazone, it has no practical value, but it is very cool. Before we got our little dog Tova, we had a fish tank for a number of years. I do miss some of the relaxing aspects of watching fish swim around and interact. Fish are generally low maintance and considered by many a key stress reducer. I think of this screen saver program as a virtual tamagotchi or a aquatic version of the Sims. You can do everything you would do with a normal fish tank: add and remove fish, feed them, tap on the glass (or the keyboard in this case). Even better, you can mix fresh water and salt water, no worries about two male Betas in the same tank Fortunately you don't have to clean the tank and you don't get algae. If you want fish not included in the tank, you can buy some more online If you ( or someone you know) enjoys fish and want to buy something fun and rather frivolous, this is a great program. If you aren't into fish, probably not worth buying Pros: Does exactly what is says, creates a virtual fish tank Cons: Probably a productivity waster at the office, gotta love fish to enjoy the program.
THE FISH ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! July 2, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like this screensaver, because you think the fish are really real and you can feed them and watch them and you tap on the glass your fish will sometimes react. I'm going to keep it forever and ever. The 2 expansion packs to complete my screensaver of fish is the Arowana pack and the funstuff pack. Thank you for reading this cool review and my name is Kris.I really like aquazone!
