Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Don't trust your spyware protection to just anyone. Spyware Doctor has consistently been awarded Editors' Choice, by leading PC magazines and testing laboratories around the world, including United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany and Australia. Did you know that many programs tested against Spyware Doctor detected only a small fraction of Spyware and only completely removed an even smaller amount? Also most of them were unable to effectively block Spyware in real time from being installed on users PC in the first place. Spyware Doctor's advanced OnGuard technology only alerts you on a true Spyware detection. You should not be interrupted by cryptic questions every time you install software, add a site to your favorites or change your PC settings. Such messages can be confusing and may result in undesirable outcomes such as program errors, lost favorites or even spyware being allowed to install on the system.

Works silently in the background with low CPU usage Network Guard - New threats have evolved to attack additional network registry settings. Network Guard has been upgraded to include additional protection against these new threats and prevent them from interfering with your Internet connection by guarding extra network registry settings. Email Guard - protection against, and instantly removes, spyware and viruses being sent or received via e-mails. Supports all popular e-mail applications (like Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Mail and Thunderbird) that use POP3, IMAP or SMTP Designed for Windows Vista 32-bit, XP and 2000 Protects up to 3 PCs

1 out of 5 stars Total resource pig   September 17, 2007

I just got this. It was highly recommended by a recent computer magazine. I hate it. It is a total resource pig. If you'd like your very fast computer not to be fast anymore, this is the one for you. I have no doubt that the computer mag review was right that it does a great job of scanning and catching things, but it's just not worth running on your system. Maybe only if you disable the active guard system and only use it to scan, like overnight, would it be worth it. I'm very sorry that I bought it. I cannot recommend it because it's clearly poorly designed. (This is running a core duo 2 at 2.16 ghz. and 2 gigs of Ram on a Think Pad)

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely not ready for prime time.   October 5, 2007

I have been subscribed to Spyware Doctor 5 for over a year, based on reviews in Computer Magazines.

Most of the first year's subscription was wasted with the software's being deleted from my system because it was incompatible with my computer. It sent up blocking algorithms that wouldn't allow Internet Explorer to load, slowed my computer often to a crawl, would crash my computer when coming out of hibernation, and took forever to load itself to do a scan. I have a 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM Workstation with what would seem to be more than adequate resources to run even this bloated program. It did seem to catch some spyware that Norton Internet Security, Spyware Blaster, and Adaware, in the aggregate, missed in its long comprehensive scan, but it just wasn't worth the incredible nuisance. I had many email exchanges with their Tech Support which was very prompt and polite, and furnished several suggestions, none of which seemed to help.

With the raves in the media, and before all the negative customer reviews started appearing, I thought my problems were due to conflicts which SD was confronting with other software on my computer, as a specific problem.

When their latest iteration of version 5 came out, I thought I would give it one more try and, I guess being a glutton for punishment, I recently renewed my subscription, based on the encouragement provided by their Tech Support and the recent PC World review. Well, unfortunately it was "business as usual" in all respects, other than the problem with IE and startup time which had been solved.

After a few more exchanges with Tech Support, they kindly offered to refund my subscription renewal cost, and that was accomplished immediately upon my request.

Now realizing, out in the real world, as evidenced by the numerous similar customer difficulties reported, that this program, however well intentioned, is just not ready for prime time, I would advise people to pass on Spyware Doctor 5. Hopefully, PC Tools has gotten the message, and is diligently working on Version 6 which will successfully address the numerous problems that plague this program in its current state of development.

Bottom line: AVOID.....not recommended.

The Spyware Doctor kills your computer. Here's my advice to you, get another kind of virus/spyware protection though Spyware doctor may clean your computer of spy programs, I had to delete it just to get my computer to move again. More times than not it COMPLETELY FROZE MY COMPUTER!!! I have a Brand new computer upgraded to 4GB The best sound and graphic card on the market and this program made my NEW and UPGRADED TO THE MAX COMPUTER act like a piece of JUNK! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR COMPUTER MEMORY on this STUPID PROGRAM!!!

This product is the clunkiest thing I have ever had on my computer. My computer runs better with virus's romping around than the way it runs with Spyware Doctor running on it. I even disabled all of its components so that it would only run when I asked it to but its designed to keep churning away when you have no desire for it to. My advise, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY, IT WILL JUST WASTE YOUR TIME BOGGING YOUR COMPUTER DOWN!!!! To make it worse, it looks like I'll have to spend some time getting my account deleted so they don't keep charging me annually.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of sneaky charges to your credit card   December 29, 2007

I downloaded this PC Tools from the company website last year to rid my Windows PC of a spyware infestation that several other programs were unable to clean. PC Tools succeeded in cleaning my machine, but the whole effort of constantly trying to keep all these viruses and spyware programs at bay prompted me to switch to a Mac after 20 years on PCs. So I now have no need of virus/spyware protection programs. Imagine my surprise when my credit card was charged $29 over 11 months after my previous purchase for an "Annual Update" of PC Tools! I did not ask for this update and certainly did not want it. It took me numerous emails, credit card dispute forms and considerable aggravation to finally get my money back. If you buy this software here on Amazon, do not let PC Tools have any of your personal information when registering. My experience is that they violate their customer's trust- and their wallet!
