Excellent, big improvement over last edition May 4, 2005 Patrick Holt (San Antonio, TX USA) 149 out of 154 found this review helpful
I gave this book 4 stars because it covers all the new features in Photoshop cs2 very well. I don't agree with the authors avoidance of 16 bit process so that is why it doesn't get 5 stars. I bought this mainly to learn all the new feature in photoshop cs2 and the book covers those features very well. Especially the new smart sharpening feature and the enhanced camera raw, and all the other new features. Also it includes a multi-tone grey card to help with color balancing. This books covers in a much more intresting fashion- the material in the new cs2 manual included with the cd. The nice thing here is that the author offers example settings that probably can be applied to 85% of your images as is and give you good results.
Kelby book compared to others February 20, 2006 R. Matson (LA) 95 out of 97 found this review helpful
In my recent effort to educate myself in matters of Photoshop CS2 I read in detail three books - Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers by Martin Evening, Photoshop CS2 by Fraser & Blatner, and The Photoshop CS2 book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby. Of the three, I would rank the Evening and the Fraser & Blatner books as comprehensive books that, if the reader would fully understand all that was discussed, they would be considered a Photoshop Pro. The Kelby book I considered to be quite basic in that it covered only some of the principal topics and did so in an elementary fashion (it would take Kelby four pages with all his illustrations and stepwise instructions to cover what the other books might cover in one). I would recommend the Kelby book for a hobbyist that doesn't want to devote a lot of learning time and who wishes only a basic knowledge of Photoshop CS2 in order to occasionally turn out a nice image. I would recommend either of the other two books if one wants a mastery of what CS2 can really do. But, be warned that the subject is complex and will take a lot of time to learn. Of the two, Evening's book has the advantage in that it is a little less expensive, he includes a disk containing the images used in many of his tutorials so the reader can follow along with the same exercises, and because he is a fashion photographer many of his images are fashion shots of pretty women. The Fraser & Blatner book has the advantage of being somewhat larger and more complete and goes into deeper detail on some aspects of CS2. Both of these books have a high orientation to producing images for commercial press publication. I would recommend that if one wants to really learn CS2 they read both books, even though the same topics are covered in both, the subject is sufficiently complex it pays to learn it twice from perhaps somewhat different angles.
A MUST for digital photography! July 2, 2005 J. Chambers (Georgia, United States) 94 out of 102 found this review helpful
If you use Photoshop CS2 to edit digital images, this book is a must-have. Scott Kelby doesn't waste your time showing you how to do artwork with Photoshop. This book is about digital photography, and it's by far the best book in my library for that. Even if you have Kelby's earlier book on Photoshop CS, there's a lot of new and added material in this book. It's well worth the price to upgrade. In one word: Indispensable.
The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers September 28, 2005 Quasimodo (Pakistan) 48 out of 67 found this review helpful
Living in Pakistan has its disadvantages (apart from being considered a developing country's citizen). We don't get to see or compare the quality of recent books' contents in a bookshop so we wait till new or second hand books start appearing in the market (that's atleast after 12 months of the book launch in case of specialized software like Photoshop). I saw the reviews for The Adobe PSCS book for digital photographers by Scott Kelby on the internet(I still regret why I didn't choose the Martin Evening one). Since it was going to be my 1st Photoshop Book I did not delve deeper into it. Moreover, I didnot have the means to take a look at the book. My parents who at that time were in the US got it for me. The book looked ok as I was a newbie at Photoshop (though the book claimed it was for Pros too..what a crock). 6 months later I found a second hand book by Katrin Eisman Photoshop restoration and retouching 2nd edition. It was then that I realized how shallow the Kelby Book was. All he did was paste big pictures (I guess he didn't wan't to put meaningful and advanced content..smaller pics and more information/techniques would made the reader happier and a more informed Photoshop user) and kept repeating same techniques on several pages. He could have described the clone, healing, and patch tools within 3 pages..along with all their details). Anyways, that was a mistake on my part Lately, I saw his new book, The Photoshop CS2 Book for digital photographers. Except for Raw and Bridge info (which I guess we can find for free on the internet tutorials)nothing was new..nothing (I had even found the grey point detection technique much earlier on the internet). He kept repeating everything that he had described in his earlier book (This time with new big pics :)). What made me laugh was he wasted a few pages on telling how the spot healing brush works..that is click on the tool..click on the spot...thats it (no mentioning of the options for the spot healing (like create texture and what that would do..details of which are available on the internet for free). But thankfully I had not bought the book this time. Otherwise it would be another $20+ gone down the drain.
Same o' Same o' November 17, 2005 A. Duy (CA, USA) 34 out of 40 found this review helpful
Im all for scott kelby's books but this is geting rediculous. I have been a scott kelby's fan for a while now and every book he wrote i bought. I actually read every page and bookmarked all the good effects thats why i can tell you this with a straight face, if you previously own a photoshop book for digital photographer written by Mr. Kelby then please, do your self a favor by not wasting your money on this one. He just use the SAME EXACT techniques from his previous books, slap on new pictures add maybe 3 new tricks that are not so impressive. The new tricks he include in here are mostly how to make your image look like a frame... wich translate to adding a black background under your image THATS THE ONLY NEW THING. This book is good for those who havent seen a book by scott kelby before thats the only i gave it 3 stars... it should really be 0 star i am trully disapointed in scott kelby for practically stealing 30 bucks from me and sorry to say he just lost a loyal fan
