Avoid, if at all possible... September 30, 2007 Randall Bateman (St. Louis, MO USA) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I just spent two hours getting this buggy software (X1) to install. First, it wouldn't upgrade, then I couldn't uninstall, then I couldn't even use my old library with my old version (I didn't add anything to it) I've been hijacked by Endnote! I bought the newer version and then it said I had the wrong serial... guess what? the software can't even recognize correct serials unless to go back a screen then forward another screen?! Can't this be fixed?? Why such lowsy software - some of us want to write papers and not troubleshoot poor programming. Shame on Endnote programmers! If you can find ANY other software that can do references in windows, I would suggest it just to avoid the Endnote trap (you have to buy an upgrade to fix bugs in the older versions, the newer versions change the reference files so you can't go back, and the newer versions have even more bugs). See below Endnotes FAQ for this: Frequently Asked Questions Back Install 29: When installing Endnote X1 upgrade, I have entered my serial number and gotten "Invalid Serial Number." I know the serial number is now correct, how can I fix this? Answer: 1. Use valid upgrade product key. 2. Click next, then enter old serial number 3. If you get an error message saying "Invalid Serial Number" that states "You did not enter a valid serial number for your previous version of EndNote. Please re-enter this number." Invalid Serial Number 4. Click OK, then hit the "Back" button. Once you are on the product key page again, click "Next" Product Key 5. Now you can correct the serial number, and click "Next"- if it is a valid key, the install process will then continue. Don't waste 100 dollars on this software when you can get all the same features and more for free with Zotero. I almost bought EndNote convinced I needed it to write my dissertation. Luckily, I found out about Zotero just before purchasing EndNote. I won't go into the details of Zotero but it is better than EndNote and free.
