  • Whether fighting evil hordes as a lone idiot, um, I mean warrior, or teaming up with online friends to carve a path of destruction through your foes, Dungeon Runners will quench your deepest dungeon-crawling thirst. Game Details:
  • Game includes 6 Months of Premium Membership Access, which normally costs $5/month.
  • Access the new Bling Gnome sidekicks, that help you collect loot and `process' your gold. Available only with the boxed version of Dungeon Runners.
  • Throw off the yoke of other MMO's - mix & match from the ever-growing list of skills and powers to create your own custom class.
  • Undertake hundreds missions and quests to rid the world of bad guys and icky monster things.
  • Gather in public meeting areas, then adventure in randomly-generated dungeons at your own pace. Turtle or rocket through at breakneck speeds - hey, it's your neck!
  • Die a shameful death as a n00b in the kiddie dungeon. Or become a legend - basking in the limelight as your powers, equipment and influence grow.

  • …oh and the Exteel client is included

5 out of 5 stars Just Play It   June 27, 2008

I've been playing RPGs since before they were available on computers. I've been playing this one for just over a year. I love the complicated play and in depth storyline some RPGs offer, but sometimes I just want to get in there and whack things on the head. Dungeon Runners delivers the whackability.

Beat stuff over the head, or shoot it, or magic it if you prefer, until it dies (bloodlessly) (don't worry, the monsters are well compensated for their participation and always resurrect for another go.) Get experience points to move up levels and get fabulous loot for selling or using. Then go back and do it again. If the monsters get you instead, don't worry; you also have amazing regenerative powers and can jump back in there almost immediately.

Along with the whacking, you can entertain yourself with wacky quests provided for each of the many dungeons available as you progress. You have to experience the in game atmosphere to believe it. This is not a game that takes itself seriously. Trust me; you really need to check it out to see what I mean here. The description on the box here at Amazon is just the tip of the iceberg. And really, you can check it out for free, and NEVER pay if that's what you want. I, however, am happy to contribute the five bucks a month, and am getting the box for the bling, not the six months subscription.

Pros:
A-dict-ive
absolutely HI-larious
on the whole, a nice community of players
can play alone or in a group
simple gameplay, but cleverness factor adds depth
new content added often enough to keep me going for a year and counting

Cons:
if you have to have a developed plot, then this is not the game for you
if you don't like dungeon crawlers, then this is not the game for you
current level cap is 100 (OTOH, it provides a goal instead of endless wandering)
people with no sense of humor will not be amused

Seriously, just play it :)

3 out of 5 stars Very Pretty Rogue/Diablo/Dungeon Diver; Repetitive and Laggy   July 25, 2008

Dungeon Runners is a massively multiplayer online game where you can choose one of three character classes (ranger, mage or warrior) and explore dungeons fighting monsters and collecting gold and useful items. It's very pretty to look at, and it's a nice zen exercise. Your dungeon diving is driven by quests given by non-player characters; the voice acting of the NPCs is fun, and the quest descriptions can be entertaining. The community is generally friendly, although it seems to be younger on average than the World of Warcraft crowd and mostly male.

Dungeon Runners can be played for free by downloading the game. Premium members pay a monthly subscription fee of $5 a month, and those who purchase the software in the box (rather than downloading it) get 6 months of premium membership and the much-coveted "bling gnome", which follows its owner around converting found items to gold and saving the player the effort of carrying it back to a merchant to sell. Premium members also gain experience faster than those who play for free, get more bank space, and can use the higher level items.

Game play is repetitive, however. There is no room for player initiative or imagination. There is not much world to explore -- there's one little town; the rest is dungeons. Every quest involves killing a particular monster, killing a number of monsters, recovering something that monsters randomly drop when killed, or locating a place in the dungeon. What is particularly painful is that progress in a dungeon is not saved -- once you log off the game, the next time you play you will have the option to enter the dungeon at the level where you last were, but the entire dungeon will once more be unmapped and populated with monsters. As the quests send players to different levels of the dungeon, this means clearing the same dungeon level again -- and again -- and again. You will find yourself continuing to play long after you want to quit, just because you want to relocate your character on another level rather than quit and have to clear the current level yet again.

Then there is the problem of lag. The servers are quite laggy and lag death is common; oddly, the amount of lag seems unrelated to server load. Players are forgiving because game play is cheap or free, but it can still get quite frustrating.

A very fun way to spend $5 for a month. I doubt my interest will last that long.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother of all RPGs it is   June 27, 2008

I have been playing this game for a few months now and it is awesome IMHO. It is a great game that is a great dose of pure fun in this day of age of hardcore wow grind raid crap games. It is nothing more than a joyous dungeon romp that is not low on humor and has some very original ideas. where else do you have pooping gnomes and abba labbas that steal candy form willy wanka??? The best part is the membership is optional but defiantly worth the measly 5 dollars a month. You know you spend more on your daily crapbucks latte so put 5 bucks into this wonderful game.

5 out of 5 stars So much value for the price!   June 28, 2008

It's amazing how much you get for the price of the retail box. The bling gnome is a massive time saver, the two free months is icing on the cake.

You also get trial codes for the other NCSOFT titles if you're curious on their other games.

You boys in Austin did good! I just want a way to outfit my bling gnome to make him look different, or a way to summon a girl bling gnome that has some other kind of roll in the game. Keep up the good work! Well worth the pice!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great for the money   August 26, 2008

I wanted a game I could walk away from. This game allows it really well, for little money. It seems to keep track well. And, you can use some way point scroll where you are, go back to a town. Time stands still in the towns. You can do a lot on your own, or join groups. I found you can join groups letting them know you will drop out at any given moment (family life, real life takes precedent) and there are groups that go for that. It means I can play, and get up and do what I need to, and get out and about, without worrying about it.

It also means I can limit my play without concern. I never tried a different online game. This one is cheap, and I have family members who either play the paid or free versions, so can group up with them when online. There is a way to do headsets and actually talk with them while playing, even though we all live thousands of miles apart. Kinda neat. Especially when we accidently discover each other playing in the social list.

It is a little repetitive in ways. But, I heard much the same about World of Warcraft, and it costs 3x as much to play.
