Lindsay and Moira Merrithew met in New York City when he was studying at Juilliard School of Performing Arts and she was a dancer. While rehabilitating from a broken foot that ended her dancing career, she discovered a then-little-known exercise program developed by Joseph Pilates and became a Pilates instructor. When the couple moved to Toronto, where Lindsay pursued work in theatre, television, and film, they couldn't find proper equipment to use for Pilates exercises and decided to make their own equipment with the help of a carpenter. As Pilates began to gain wider recognition in the early 1990s, the Merrithews seized the opportunity to begin manufacturing modern, professional-quality Pilates equipment. Their company now operates some 30 Pilates training centers in North America as well as manufacturing Pilates equipment and accessories.

Good basic exercise mat January 18, 2007

Amazon doesn't provide much detail about this mat. Mine just arrived so here's some extra info. It is 22" wide by 70" long and 3/8" thick. The integrated velcro straps work very well, keeping it rolled neatly for storage.

This is a great pilates mat. I use it for yoga also, and I can do anything on it. I'm currently using it on top of my old thin yoga mat and it's wonderful. It's getting "stickier" every time I use it too, providing good traction.

The mat is great. It is really long and extra thick. The straps on it make opening and closing extra qucik and easy.

I just recieved this and love it. Yoga mats are too thin and hurt my back. But the mats that are too thick work against the moves in my opinion. This one is perfect, especially when balancing in a V. Forgot name of move. :) Definatly recommend.
Perfect for Pilates April 2, 2008

I spent awhile looking for a mat because so many of them seem to be horrid. I'm very pleased that I chose this one. I've been using it for a couple of months and have no complains except I'm not sure how to clean it (there were no instructions on the packaging). It is very comfortable for moves that require rolling and does not slip. The attached straps are very handy and I have no trouble carting it around to class and back. The only difference I noticed is that the color (I purchased the blue one) is much darker than it appears online.
