Night Splints 101 May 31, 2008 Forrester 131 out of 132 found this review helpful
Some comments about night splints for people with plantar fasciitis: What's the purpose of a night splint? One of the hallmark symptoms of plantar fasciitis is that you have excruciating pain when you take your first steps in the morning. Why does this happen? Because the plantar fascia TIGHTENS over night as you sleep. So, when you get out of bed and put your bodyweight on your foot, well, this suddenly stretches it and..... ouch! What does a night splint do and how does it work? Night splints keep the plantar fascia STRETCHED OUT all night. So, because the plantar fasciia STAYS stretched, you can get up in the morning and start walking without pain. Even more importantly, because you haven't stepped on a tight plantar fascia in the morning, which irritates it and damages it even more, you've eliminated further stress- which gives it a chance to heal. Do they work? Yes. As summarized in the book The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution, there are numerous clinical trials that have shown that night splints are indeed quite effective at getting rid of plantar fasciitis. If you're up for trying this treatment for your plantar fasciitis, be aware that you have to wear a night splint ALL night long for it to really work, so, pick one that looks like something you could actually sleep in. The Swede-O Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint, Gray is a little bulkier than some, such as the Futuro brand- BUT THEY ALL DO THE SAME THING. It's simply a matter of finding the most comfortable one for you. Some of the things I do like about this particular model is: -has lots of nice soft padding for comfort and protection against skin irritation -fits either the right or the left foot -available in different sizes
surprisingly effective for avoiding morning plantar faciitis pain June 7, 2007 William J. Dyer (Houston, TX United States) 22 out of 34 found this review helpful
I have been pleased with this product, especially as compared to a soft Thermoskin Plantar FXT device that really didn't stablize my ankle movement at all. My plantar fasciitis was not responding to other treatment strategies (exercises and stretching, icing down, ibuprofin as an anti-inflammatory) after several weeks. And I think I had underestimated just how much shrinkage and tightening up was going on in the fascia every night while I was sleeping. Preventing my ankle from flexing, i.e., keeping my toe from pointing down parallel with my leg bones, made a huge difference in the amount of pain I was feeling upon getting out of bed each morning. I'm guessing that I'd been doing a fair amount of re-injury every morning before I started using the Swede-O splint. This product is very simple, and seems to be constructed of good materials. It's reasonably comfortable. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that the velcro closure for the top strap is a bit wider than the strap itself, which means you may have velcro rubbing against the skin on your shin. Wearing a sock pretty much solves that problem, though, and is a good idea anyway. Don't plan to walk in it. It's not designed for that, and you just can't. I bought the X-Large, and wish I'd gotten just the Large size. (I wear a men's size 10-1/2 shoe.)
Very comfortable June 28, 2007 Marcy L. Stevick (Eugene, OR) 13 out of 18 found this review helpful
Since it supposedly takes six months for plantar fasciitis to heal, I can't speak to that as I've only had the splint for about a week. And I can't give it 5 stars b/c this is the only splint I've ever tried. But...I can say that it's very comfortable. I followed the advice of another reviewer and ordered a size smaller than what the company claims. I wear a woman's size 8, which the company claims is a medium, but I bought the small, and it fits well. Sure, it feels lik you have something on your foot and leg, but it's quite comfortable. It doesn't keep me up at night, and I have no trouble turning around in bed. I still have pain during the day, but the severe pain upon taking the first few steps in the morning is gone whenever I wear the splint.
plantar fasciitis fighter December 21, 2007 D. Zalkind 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was having trouble getting rid of plantar fasciitis on my own by using several exercises recommended by a physical therapist. After consulting with another physical therapist and a doctor, I understood that one reason the problem does not clear up is that the feet are in a relaxed position each night when a person sleeps. Although healing occurs during this time, it is disrupted when you get out of bed and step on the floor (bending the foot and stretching the ligament at the bottom of the foot). This device is worn when you sleep ahd is supposed to hold the foot at a 90 degree angle so that the ligaments at the bottom of the foot remain stretched all night and there is much less of a "shock" to the foot when you step out of bed. The device, together with several other conservative approaches (including suspending all lower body exercise for a couple of months), enabled me to get rid of the plantar fasciitis (for the past few weeks, at least). The instructions with the night splint tell you not to walk in them. However, the physical therapist told me that it was fine to walk in them., so I did. (It would have been an incredible nuisance to take them off in the middle of the night when I got out of bed.) Walking in them is a little bit like walking in swim fins -- you have to do it carefully. The pair I ordered seemed to be much too large, although I thought that I used the guidelines properly when I placed the order. My foot was not held at a full 90 degree angle. However, there was an advantage to the unexpected "roominess". I had read that some night splints could be quite uncomfortable and interfere with sleep. Because my feet had some room to move around inside the splint, I did not have this problem.

Despite its awkward size, it was comfortable to wear and did what it was supposed to do.
