3 out of 5 stars Only large jobs need apply   October 30, 2003

It really pains me to give this sprayer only 3 stars, but that's pretty much the bottom line here after weighing all factors. The good news is that the finished painted surface is excellent, the spray is very fine and consistent, and the unit seems very well designed and well made. It didn't leak a drop. I like that the pump and paint hopper are separate from the spray gun, so you only have to carry around the lightweight gun.
Now for the bad news. The sprayer tends to suck air in if you're using a thicker paint, like acrylic latex, unless you have at least 1 1/2 inches in the hopper (bucket). Once air gets in you have to stop and reprime the pump, which isn't easy when you're sealed in an empty masked room and you're covered head-to-toe in protective gear. With paint sprayers, goggles, a respirator, and overalls are MANDATORY. Also, you have to mask surfaces really well or mist will get on them. Because the hopper is so big, you end up wasting a lot of paint when you're done. You can pour it back into the can, but there's a lot left on the walls of the hopper. Again, you need a lot in there just to get it to work at all. Cleanup is a PAIN. You have to wash out the machine, run water/soap through it repeatedly, disassemble and clean the gun, and oil everything down EVERY time you use it OR even if you just want to change paint colors. I used it for the 2nd time tonight to paint a ceiling. The entire job, from getting dressed to cleaning up, took me about 2 1/2 hours (not including masking). I spent 5-10 minutes actually spraying, the rest of the time was spent cleaning, prepping the machine, adding paint to the hopper and repriming the pump, and getting dressed.
If I had to use 10 gallons of paint (one color) or more on a job, I would gladly reach for this product, and I would probably give it 4-5 stars. Anything smaller, and a roller is much preferred. The box says "medium to large jobs", but only large jobs need apply.

5 out of 5 stars Wagner Paint Crew   November 13, 2003

I used this painter to spray a 3 BR house interior ceiling, front porch and exterior trim. The unit made very short work of the actual painting time and delivered good coverage. By the time I finished the 1st BR, I was used to the unit and able to control the spray better. The gun is very nice and lightweight. The supplied tip worked great for the things I painted, but I did some research and found out there are optional tips for finer detail work that can be purchased separately. Masking certain areas goes without question. I found that it was better to keep the hopper full or at least half full of paint. Only thing I didnt like I was always having to untwist the supply cable. 25ft of cable is nice so you dont have to drag the unit all over with you, but I found I had to stop from time to time just to untwist the cable. Again this can be overcome with an optional swivel attachment for the gun. I think this should have been included with the unit. Overall it was a breeze to use and lived up to my expectations. Cleanup was a bit in depth. I probably spent nearly an hour cleaning the unit, but it didnt matter to me because I had saved time on the painting and wanted to get it thoroughly clean.

5 out of 5 stars Great for large projects   December 26, 2004

I bought the Wagner Paint Crew back in fall of 2003 to paint the interior of my house and for under $200 it was well worth the money. You get a professional quality paint job in probably a 1/4 of the time it would take to paint with a brush and roller.

Before you start: 1) You NEED to buy protective gear for spraying. That includes: Spray hood or sock, disposable spray suit, shoe covers or just used bags secured with rubber bands or duct tape, googles, 3M type respirator w/ filter cartridges, and disposable gloves. A respirator is absolutely necessary if spraying indoors. 2) Mask off and cover everything you don't want to get paint on. The spray gun makes a very fine dust that stays in the air for a few hours and covers everything. 3) Strain the paint when filling the hopper so the inlet filter doesn't clog. Especially important if you are using paint that has been sitting around your house for a few months.

Tips while spraying: 1) Make sure all the connections are tight. The includes the spray tip, the spray gun and the hose. It's a good idea to to occasionally check that the spray tip and spray gun are still tight during prolonged use. 2) Have someone available to help you strain and refill the paint hopper. It saves time because the sprayer thinks it's empty when there is still a 1/2 gallon of paint left in the hopper. 3) Look for runny paint where you sprayed too much paint and use a brush to touch up the area before the paint dries.

The only real flaw of the Paint Crew Sprayer is that its' hard to pour unused paint from the hopper back into a paint container. However I didn't deduct one star on my review because I finally figured out that I can use the prime setting to empty the paint hopper by placing the return tube over a one gallon paint can and letting the Paint Crew empty the hopper by itself. Just use a plastic putty knife to get as much paint of the sides of the hopper and help move the paint for the back of the hopper towards the inlet filter while you let the sprayer run on the prime setting. You can recover almost 100% of the paint from the hopper without risk of spilling paint when trying to lift and pour paint back into a container. Clean up is a lot easier once you get most of the paint out of the hopper.

2 out of 5 stars VERY Disappointed   June 11, 2004

This unit may be great to those who are not overly familiar with airless paint sprayers but I have used a number of them and this unit is by far THE worst. I almost didn't buy it to begin with but at $199 price point I thought I'd give it a try. I'm just glad I got my money back! The hopper design is inherently a terrible idea. I assume Wagner did this to try to cut cost in some way but believe me, it wasn't worth it. The hopper "holds" three gallons but you have to refill it every two gallons because it gets poor suction with the last gallon and loses pressure. I don't care if the hopper holds 10 gallons. If I have to refill it every two gallons in order to make it work then who cares what it "holds"? And I cannot stress what a nightmare the unit was to clean. Look at the other reviewers of this unit and how they describe it. They are NOT exagerating! And Wagner may try to make it look like it is easy pouring paint out of the hopper and back into a bucket but I'd bet my life the actors are pouring an empty unit and then graphic artists drew in the paint on those pictures! Furthermore, and this is just a sore spot with me anyway, the unit was built in China. That probably explains the low cost too.

Before I mention the last straw that had me dragging the unit back for a refund, let me mention some positive comments. It had good pressure and the gun was metal though it is of an older design (using up old stock maybe?) and the hose was 25'.

Now, the doozey that caused me to lose it. I had used it twice and was now on my third project when the unit just lost all pressure. When I walked over to the unit I noticed paint coming out of the pump. The piston packing had failed! I called a service center and they didn't have the parts to fix it and said they would have to send it back to get it fixed. So I carried it back to the store (probably can't mention it here) and got a refund and painted the rest of the job with my roller brush. I was already disappointed in the product so this was just the icing on the cake.

But the story does get better. First, I love the higher end pumps but have difficulty paying $400+ dollars for a good sprayer. I had almost settled on the idea that you can't get a good sprayer for less than $300 when I saw an add in a flier (won't mention it because I didn't buy it at Amazon) for a Campbell Hausfeld airless sprayer for $229. The pressure is a little lower (2500psi instead of 2750psi) but the pressure is also adjustable. Which is VERY good when spraying stains and you don't want 2750psi due to misting problems. This unit (it's called the HousePainter) adjusts from 0psi up to 2500psi so you can tune in the desired spray finish you want. Also, you can attach a roller brush to it and you can roll with it, something you can't do with the PaintCrew. But the best thing of all it that it is not a hopper design. It pulls paint straight out of a one or five gallon bucket. The clean up was very fast. Just put the suction tube into a bucket of water and it circulates itself and cleans it up. Two bad points to the HousePainet though. First, it comes with 20' of hose instead of 25' and second, the power cord is only 2' long. However, I have always needed an extension cord anyway so that it not that big of a deal. Oh, and I also noticed it was "assembled in the USA". Not quite as good as "made in the USA" but it's better than seeing that slogan "made in China" that is plastered on the PaintCrew. Thank you Campbell Hausfeld for at least keeping some jobs in the USA!

I did notice that the HousePainter is now being sold here at Amazon.com for only $199. (just search Amazon for Campbell Hausfeld and you should find it. Model # EZ5000) It turns my stomach that I paid $229 elsewhere but even at $229 I was glad I bought it. I don't know the life yet as I've only painted with it twice but so far this unit is way better than the PaintCrew on both clean up, pressure adjusting and the fact that I can hook a roller brush up to it and roll paint inside the house is priceless. Saves money on having to buy a separate roller unit. I suppose I will now need to write a review for the HousePainter as well. But anyway, pay heed to all these reviews that talk about the cleaning problems. It's a nightmare and we do have a choice for another unit at the same price that is easier to clean and can actually do MORE than just SPRAY paint at ONE pressure.

5 out of 5 stars The power painter did everything it was advertised to do and exceeded expectations.   August 8, 2005

The previous reviews were at first a little disheartening; as this was given as a gift and I couldn't very well return it. So I pressed on, in an attempt to use it.

I did my own research and did see the need for an in-line swivel which proved to be worth it's wait in gold after finding myself painting a 2,300 square foot (outside paint able dimensions) house and the majority of it was atop a 24 ft ladder. I also did my homework and found that the tip (.513) provided would accomplish my need of applying latex exterior paint but a .515 would do much better; with a cleaner spray without gumming up the tip.

The whole priming the pump was no hassle and just took about 2 minutes but crucial and most important was that I strained the paint before I poured which will not cause the pump to loose suction in attempting to move debris (paint film) through the filter. I never had a problem in the pump not working if it didn't have less than half. In fact, unintentionally I ran it bone dry when I was up on a high ledge of the house for a considerable time. I climbed back down, filled it up and was good to go once I had primed it again.

When I had finished; the same day I started, extracting the excess paint from the hopper into a container, all one has to do is turn the primer tube from flowing back into the hopper into the paint can and the machine will do it for you. In cleaning time, my wife cleaned the brush for the trim work and I the Paint crew and all in all it worked out to be about the same. The trick is to purchase the Wagner cleaner agent that thoroughly cleans the system if you run it through when you are done, because after I took the gun apart it was very clean and didn't need a lot of extra elbow grease from me and this was after 7 gallons of paint and 6 hours later.

All in all the application was flawless and I was impressed with the overall use, but take the time to familiarize yourself with the instructions provided; meaning read it before you've already poured the paint into the hopper and are itching to start.
