Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Ideal for home or recreational use, the Fiskars hatchet with 14-inch handle features a tough, forged steel axe head. The one-piece handle is over molded around the head to prevent loosening and separation. The stay-sharp fully hardened blade comes with a non-stick coating that cuts with less effort and resists rust. The included fiberglass composite handle is lightweight and strong, and the hatchet includes a plastic sheath for easy transportation and safe storage.

3 out of 5 stars Good handle, not so good head/steel   June 20, 2007

I bought this axe after watching the Fiskars axes being run over with a giant truck and not breaking. Fiskars axes being made in Finland so they seem like good quality. I've been using this axe to split a lot of wood. It does a decent job on softer wood like pine. It doesn't do so well on the harder woods. This is due to the edge being too soft. It rolls very easily. Now, I'm not a metalurgist but I can tell you that either the steel used in these axes is very low quality or they just harden it very soft (53-54RC)so edges won't chip. I think it's both. In contrast, a high quality, axe type steel can be very though yet at the same time can have a thin edge to chop well. This isn't the case here. I do like the fiberglass handle that's why I still use this axe. The handle is very light so most of the weight is on the head. In summary: Good hande, not so good head/steel.

I purchased this hatchet at my local Lowe's two weeks ago. I used it primarily to make kindling from larger seasond firewood. It worked very well until last night when the handle shattered just below the head. I sent an e-mail to Fiskars and am now waiting for their response.

5 out of 5 stars one awesome ax !   March 5, 2008

I have purchased several of these axes for my family and we love them, they are extremely sharp and cut with ease, the one fault that I'm willing to put up with is that they do dent and nick the cutting edge pretty easily because the blade is so fine edged, even when nicked up they cut way better than other axes, I have never found a better cutting edge than these

I haven't gotten mine yet but my friend has one that I've used several times and it's the best hatchet I've ever seen, so I'm getting one from Amazon instead of stealing his. My ethics should be a shining example to everyone.

*Later* The handle gets slippery in winter and after a couple slips I wrapped it with athletic tape, 1/4" cord-spiral wound with gaps about 3/4 finger width, and another two, tight layers of athletic tape. And I cut the top handle off the case to save space in my pack. Holds its edge very well; which is a good reason to improve the grip; and I still think it's the best you can get. *Laterer* Caught up to a buddy wacking an aspen that fell across the trail at waist level with his stubby hatchet. I went to work on the other side and soon had him beat and lent him mine to finish up. Stubby hatchets are stoopid.

I use it when I go Elk hunting. Great for hiking or backpaking.
