Amazon.com Product Description The Kidde 25-foot escape ladder provides a way to escape fires or other emergencies and offers your family an essential piece of safety equipment if you live in a two- or three-story home. The National Fire Protection Association recommends one ladder in every occupied room on floors above the main level. This durable ladder stores conveniently under the bed or near a window and deploys quickly and easily. It will support a maximum weight of 1,000 pounds when the load is distributed on more than one rung, while the maximum weight for each rung is 750 pounds. The metal rung steps prevent slippage to ensure a safe climb down, and its tangle-free design makes for easy packing and repacking. No assembly or tools are required, and it is backed by a 5-year warranty.

I choose not to buy for safety and ethical reasons October 18, 2007 Marc Cooper 93 out of 96 found this review helpful
(The reviewer has no personal stake in nor connection with any companies mentioned in this review.) In 2001 Kidde was found guilty in a jury trial for stealing from X-IT, LLC the product and packaging design for an emergency fire escape ladder and marketing it as their own (search the web for "kidde jury" to find articles reporting this verdict). After the trial, the attorney for X-It said, "Our expert tested their ladder and said it burned like a candle. He had a little piece of goo that he passed around to the jury to show them how Kidde's ladder would burn." Kidde refused to recall the over 16,000 ladders they had sold utilizing that same exact design. For safety reasons I will not purchase their product because I am not sure that Kidde has substantially changed the dangerous design of the ladders they sell. They may say they have changed the design and/or components, but can they be trusted given their recent track record? For ethical reasons I choose not to purchase from a company that knowingly and blatantly steals. Instead, I'll be purchasing an X-It ladder (which is intermittently available on Amazon). I would not buy a ladder marketed as "one use" (meaning unpacking) and that is very hard to re-pack. Part of being fire-safe and ready for an emergency is to PRACTICE using the equipment you may have to use in the dark and under stress. I'd definitely want each member of my family to practice using the ladder BEFORE an emergency. I can understand a company stating the ladder should be replaced after use in an actual fire situation: they cannot guarantee the future integrity of the ladder if it has been subjected to high heat or flame.
5 year warranty November 14, 2007 V. Chan (New York, NY USA) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
As most of the other reviewers have stated, the box clearly mentions that this is a ONE time use ladder. But there is also mention of a 5 year limited warranty when you read the instruction manual. What good is a warranty if I can't determine if it's defective until I actually have to use it in an emergency??! And if it is defective, and I fall and get injured, I'm going to want more than just a "new" ladder. I can't actually say how well the ladder works since I'm forbidden to test it, but I bought it anyways just in case. The warranty makes no sense though, it's like they're mocking me.
Finally a ladder that will help us escape January 16, 2007 A. Nicklas (DC) 13 out of 18 found this review helpful
Though we have not tested the ladder, as it has only one time use. It has been designed well with solid metal steps and a very small pakcing and storage size. Overall recommended to any that need an alternate escape route out of a house or townhome.
Review of Kidde 25-Foor Fire Escape Ladder July 23, 2008 C. Miller (New York State) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this fire escape ladder as a scondary means of escape for my son in his first apartment. My son took the ladder out of the box and was a little dismayed to read that the ladder is considered a one-use product. He had extended a few feet of the ladder just to become familiar with it and realized the reason it states that the ladder is a one-use item - you need to pay particular attention to refolding and keeping the ladder untangled so in an emergency, it will drop down and open up completely for a safe escape from an upper level window.

The Fire Escape Ladder gives me peace of mind to know that it is there, just in case.
