Beefy, but not much better than wood January 6, 2007 Kate and Mike (Madbury, NH) 17 out of 21 found this review helpful
Our application is a sliding door and not as something you can use to prop the front door shut. Pro: -Beefy metal telescoping pipe construction, weighs about 3-4 pounds -Lots of adjustments in increments of about 1/8" or so to fit pretty well in our door -Adjustments are quick/easy to make without tools -Bright white so it's easy to spot from afar as a deterrent -The wide diameter pipe, about 1.5" also makes it easier to spot from afar -Name brand you trust Con: -My piece of oak worked pretty much the same (although admittedly our oak bar was a tad too short so it was easier to "jimmy" open). No attachment option to the door and jam, works only off pressure... no method to keep in place securely. Our son often loosens or totally defeats the bar without our knowledge because of this. -Other charley bars often offer a folding design that no only prevents the bar from being knocked loose, but also allow it to fold up like a draw bridge, storing it out of the way (see our review of the "Patio Door Security Bar" that we bought from International Pro Source here on Amazon) Neutral: -For us, the pivoting foot and front door security option are nice, but features that we'll never use, thus the neutral rating on this element Bottom Line: Some mixed pros and cons for our application. Consider all options before making a decision.
Great Product January 23, 2006 D. Hurst (Seattle, WA) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
My brother gave me one of these a while back. It is great for sliding glass doors. There a number a holes in the unit that allow for a large number of adjustments. Once you have the best adjustment, you can lock the unit in place (and then remove it) with one lever. The feet on the end also pivot. All around a great design.
Decent Cheap Door Security October 16, 2006 B. Lee (fremont, ca) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
With all the hype about bump keys (which basically renders most locks useless), I tried to think of something that can counter it. So far, this is the only thing that I can find short of buying a top of the line lock for a $80 - $200. With this door jammer, it doesn't matter if someone can bypass the lock; it keeps the door shut. Pros: *moderately effective *low price *portable *versatile (it's adjustable and can be used on both doors and sliding doors) *able to use as a makeshift bat if needed *better quality than similar competitors Cons: *the rubber footing slides a little on carpet, though an potential intruder still won't be able to enter (I haven't tested this on a bare floor) -there's some room for improvement, I would much rather not have this thing even slide, no matter how little.
Overall good peace o fmind. January 5, 2007 Adam Flath (tempe, az) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The device does what is suppose to. If someone wanted to break in the front door of our apartment they would have to kick it down... and we would actually hear it. We were more afraid of someone "sneaking" in the place, rather than breaking in. When it is stretched out to the fullest it seems a little flimsy. An Added bonus is that it also works as a door stopper to hold the front door open.
peace of mind with toddler June 20, 2006 Jennifer Leigh Lacy (Sevierville, TN USA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I looked everywhere for a sliding glass door lock when my 2 year old started opening the sliding glass door by himself. A broomstick wouldn't work because he was smart enough to take that out. This product allows us to lock the door especially at night and not worry about him getting out of the door. The lock is easy to use and we can also take it with us when we travel to secure door knobs in hotel rooms.
