Does a Name Change Help? October 27, 2007 W. T. Towles (Fincastle, VA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought a heater a year ago that looks exactly like this one. When I bought it, it was called Dyna-Glo. For the first season, it worked well for auxiliary heat. Lighting it, though, resulted in copious amounts of dark, stinking kerosene smoke in my house. This season, the battery-powered lighter (with a fresh battery) does not light the burner--I have to use matches, and still the same noxious smoke. Today, it took about a hour before the heater reached maximum output. There is not much choice out there for a kerosene or propane space heater that can be placed against a wall like this one, but I am looking. I suggest that you keep looking too rather than buy this model unless Northern Tool and Equipment can convince you that it does not have the problems I describe. !!/12/07 MEA CULPA. Today I cleaned the wick on my heater, and it now lights quickly and completely, though still with the noxious smoke. Thank you, C. Johnson, for your comment. As he said, kerosene absorbs water and "gets old," so don't use kerosene from last year. And what am I supposed to do with old kerosene? Next time I will go with propane.
10600 btu kerosene heater January 11, 2008 John J. (eastern pa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
bought two of these heaters both are the same one branded mega heat and the other heat mate, both work as they should except the both give off odor while burning, i have two other convection style heaters that have no smell while running, but these two radiant models do give off odor. i have dry burned the wick, unit has been adjusted just as manual says red from top to bottom with blue flame on top , but smell is still there. any ideas to get rid of smell would be welcome, get about 11 to 12 hours burn time from full tank, if i could get rid of odor the would be great buy, stick with convection type kerosene heaters they seem to burn cleaner.
