    Editorial Reviews:

    Product Description
Plenty of climbers, backpackers and campers think of energy-saving LED headlamps as a safer substitute for tent-bound candle lanterns, but Petzl's Tikka XP shines new light on nocturnal potential beyond your tent and campsite. It features three lighting settings including a boost mode that illuminates up to 55 yards or so depending on the light-reflection properties of the surrounding terrain (wet black rocks always seem to steal some from any manufacturer's claim). While boost mode is an energy-saving option (the three AAA batteries can last up to 120 hours), it's a fairly practical feature when you think about how much time you spend looking at the ground directly in front of your feet while hiking or climbing in the pre-dawn and dusk hours. The power-saving economy mode is ideal for tent reading and sorting pack gear. A wide angle lens, tilt lamp and superb water resistance are standard features. The battery life indicator reminds you when the batteries are at 30% capacity and 10% capacity.

5 out of 5 stars These things are so freakin awesome   July 24, 2007

Got 4 of them, 2 in the autos, one in the tool chest, and one just laying around.
What I like about this model is the tilting head beam that stays locked. LED light just bright enough but not blinding, great battery life.
I use them for everything. Taking out the garbage at night, walking or jogging, changing the oil filter, working on electronics, power outage, attic.
Comfortable and light to wear, adjustable light power with a stobe option.
And you are nuts to go camping without these, you can even signal w/ them.

    5 out of 5 stars Hiking - backpacking - camping & more - very useful   November 11, 2007

I have owned many Petzl headlamps, but this one is by far the best I have owned & used. Three easily found AAA batteries power this "lite" (weighs only 95g [3.35oz] including the batteries!) light and there is a nifty Green Orange Red indicator light on the side to help you determine how much battery life is left. New/fresh batteries & the indicator blinks green. After about 70% used/discharged the indicator turns orange. Finally, Red when 90% used and they need to be replaced. As an additional alert, the headlamp's beam will blink momentarily when the indicator changes color. Speaking of batteries, I checked out Petzl USA Homepage and there is now a warning not to use Lithium batteries (especially their higher output during discharge) because they may cause the lamp to overheat and possibly damage the LEDs. There is a very functional light diffuser that allows the light to be spread; perfect for walking at night through the woods with a full pack on, or with the diffuser moved to the side, a pin point beam can be directed where you need the brightest of lighting. Battery life for the 3 lighting levels: maximum [60 hours], optimum [80 hours], economic, [120 hours] Water resistant for all-weather use. Buy this headlamp & you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great little light!   August 23, 2007

I've been wanting a light like this for awhile and finally took the plunge. The Petzl has several different models, but this one looked like the best combination of features and price.
It's been used many times and works great. Not a high penetration beam, but the LED has a blue light which seems more white than the standard tungsten lights. The headlight is very useful for jobs that require your hands free. I use it to clean my sensor on my digital camera and photography shots at night. Reading is very convenient with this type of light too!!

5 out of 5 stars By one for you and it makes a great gift   November 14, 2007

I live in the boonies and this thing is great for finding firewood at night or taking the trash out to the road on trash night. I've had other Petzl headlamps before (lost it) and this one is a big improvement. The narrow beam gives a long distance illumination and the wide beam easily covers any close in space. Those features are new and worth the upgrade price. Get one for you and keep a few around for when you don't know what to get someone for a gift. It makes a great gift because everyone needs one. Even folks who rarely use a flashlight will appreciate the fact that, due to long battery life and led bulbs, this light will always work, even if it has been left in a drawer for a year.

Best headlamp I've ever owned. Lightweight, easy to use, efficient, nice light pattern. I highly recommend it.
