Hey, I know how we can make more money... November 29, 2004 momoftwoplus (Tulsa, OK) 592 out of 623 found this review helpful
...let's make a cool toy, but not include accessories! Oh yeah, it's already being done... I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 15-month-old and 3-year-old. After reading reviews here, I unwrapped it tonight to check it out myself. =o) I was hoping that the mat had flexible plastic edging that would make it "pop" open flat (like a windshield screen). It doesn't. But someone should consider adding that feature in the next version. It is annoying to draw over wrinkles. The (wrinkled) mat is almost 3 feet square, and made of thick plastic. The white drawing surface is like rough fabric over blue plastic - a simple concept where water makes the "fabric" see-through. The precious Magic Pen is a cheap plastic tube with a felt nub. You simply fill the tube with water. I used a Q-tip dipped in water and it was fine. Also, sponge shapes dipped in water will work well. You could walk on it with wet feet, or make wet hand-prints, too. I appreciate the outline-fonted ABC's and numbers 1-10 around the edges. It was compelling to "fill them in." The pictures around the edges might help give artists ideas of what to draw. The areas where I was light with my wet Q-tip dried in about a minute. The heavier areas, naturally, are taking a lot longer to dry. I imagine this time would vary based on room humidity, use of a ceiling fan, etc. I don't think this will be an issue for us. When the mat is filled in, it's probably time to move on to a new activity anyway. The beautiful thing remains: no clean-up! I'm not sure where I'll store it, but I wouldn't put it back in a box before it dried. Maybe draped over a hanger in a closet, or folded loosely in a kitchen cabinet - this will be a great kids' activity for while I'm preparing a meal. I really like this toy because it encourages fine-motor skills (doodling) and creativity. We'll also use it to practice writing letters and numbers. I'm curious to see how my 15-month-old likes it - I'm sure our 3-year-old will love it. I had fun doodling on it myself. Now I have to wrap it again and put it back under the tree. It would be NICE if it had included another cheap Magic Pen. It angers me that they made the mat so pricey, then make you buy accessories separately - if you can even FIND any in stores (I've been looking, no luck). I will probably not buy another pen, just use Q-tips, paintbrushes, sponges with it.

I just wanted to say I am a mother of three so I bought this mat for my children to spend some fun quality time together while I get some household chores done. I agreed with the other reviews but then I found a web site where you can buy the extra pens and stamps. Now my kids really enjoy drawing on the mat. [...]. The pens and the stamps are (...)for the set. While the cost of the mat was a bit expensive for only having one pen the time that my children now spend together is well worth the extra money for the pens and stamps. I ordered a few of them just in case any of them were lost. I hope this helps other parents with the problem of not being able to find these accessories.
I would NOT recommend this toy March 28, 2004 Kristen Mathews (Derry, NH United States) 116 out of 142 found this review helpful
I am a frequent buyer/reviewer for toys online and I am generally quite happy with them. This toy has a great concept, but I really wasn't thrilled with it. As the other reviewers have stated, it is a great toy...that is, until it's all wet. I found that the manufacturer SAYS, "image disappears in approx. 20 seconds.". This is where they are wrong. My kids LOVED playing with it, until they ran out of room to write stuff. It took so long to dry to become clear again, that I had to bring it in and put my hairdryer to it for an additional FIVE minute to dry it in order to continue using it. And this toy wasn't even drenched, just regular use. The idea of this toy is great, but has a big inconvenience. Maybe when it's a hot day it'll be better....I hope! I bought two, one for my daughter and one for my niece. I'm returning the unopened one.
From a extremely pleased mom of twins November 8, 2004 T. Fraze (St. Petersburg, FL.) 63 out of 63 found this review helpful
I think this a wonderful toy. I have 2 year old twins and they love the doodle mat and the color sheets. I also have a seven year old who likes to color with my little ones. We took this on vacation and was great - no worrying about crayons and coloring on walls. I have since purchased another for my niece who is a year in a half. I have not experienced any problems with drying like the other person has. If anything it dries very quickly. We have also purchased the stamp set which came with extra pens. A must have if you have kids!
not what I expected November 29, 2005 mrssgt 42 out of 44 found this review helpful
This mat was not at all what I expected. The "pen" does not glide over the surface like you might expect a water play toy to do. The fabric is rough to the touch and does wrinkle. My 2 toddlers who both LOVE drawing and LOVE playing with water lost interest very quickly. Watch for mildew!!!! I noticed mold on ours after only 2 uses. Good concept, poorly executed and very overpriced for what you get.
