The Seaview model that fans have been waiting for! May 3, 2008 M. Purvis 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This monster of a model is what "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" TV series fans have been waiting for! The kit includes all parts to build a replica of either the 8' or 17' filming minature of the Seaview. Optional parts are: Front window sections with and without raised frames, and a missile tube section with either 16 or 20 missiles. The instructions tell you which parts apply to which miniature. Parts are also included for the interior of the observation nose and sub control room, which are visible through the 4 large bow windows. The Flying Sub launch bay is also represented on the model, complete with a scale replica of the Flying Sub itself. The Flying Sub can be displayed either docked in the bay, or on its own tiny stand (which is a miniature replica of the clear plastic stands that Aurora Plastics used to include with their aircraft kits.) A part is included to show the Flying Sub bay doors closed on the Seaview if you wish to display the Flying Sub outside of its bay. 6 seated and 2 standing crew figures are included, as well as scale replicas of the Minisub and the Nelson Institute diving bell. A display stand is also included, in the form of 2 molded plastic pedestals that plug into holes in the Seaview's keel.
A good attempt to give the fans their dream Seaview model! May 20, 2008 Kenneth W. Wingle 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes I'm a "Seaview" fan since I was a kid. It was good to see that someone finally got serious about making the worlds classiest submarine available for a reasonable price. Here is what I liked about it the most. (1)Nice and big! You can take it in the swimming pool and have a ball if you want. (2)The parts fit together to perfection. No warped or lopsided pieces that didn't fit. Like a laser cut version. (3)With a little time and patience you can paint it to a cool blue underwater color like it was seen in the TV show--plus add full lighting for more studio realistic fun like I did. Here are the Cons: The model is made to accomodate both the 18 foot and 8 foot studio models. If you are a Seaview fan you know this was a no no! The fact is--the 18 and 8 foot studio models are completely different in design--particularly the bulkhead, fin curvature and window design. You cannot just switch the windows for the 8 foot design and presto it is now the 8 foot version. The Moebius version is specifically designed for the 18 foot studio version and the bordeless windows match that design and the model should have been left that way. Moebius tried to accomodate both designs and that was a no no!!! What should they have done? Made the 18 and the 8 footer studio replicas as 2 different models. I prefer the 8 foot 6" studio model over the 18 footer. The 8 footer was used for most of the underwater scenes for the TV show and the one I like the most. The other problem I encountered is the plastic (clear) windows. They are warped and further distort by making an objects seen through it appear smaller like a negative lens instead of a clear window. I had to make new clear designs using crystal clear plastic (glass is even better). This is necessary if you put control room lighting and want to see the interior details through the window. Finally putty filler and sanding is necessary to get rid of the bulkhead lines after the window section is glued and where the 2 pieces of the hull are joined. All in all--it's a decent attempt to give the public a timeless classic that still looks great today. In fact a sub that could actually be built and I might add--no one today in TV or motion picture could match the futuristic and artistic concept of the Seaview from that era. PS I hope the Flying Sub they are preparing to make is another cool replia! Kenn Wingle
Moebius Seaview June 1, 2008 Mark Myers (NEWJERSEY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here we have the beautifull Moebius Seaview. First, I would like to say I am a Lifelong Fan of the Classic TV series by Irwin Allen. And to Fans like myself , this is a God Send!!! Ok, this Model represents the Second to fourth Season version Of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea's Submarine Seaview. This Kit is based off of the 17'2" Filming Miniature used for all the Surface Running shots as well as the Flying Sub Launch sequences. It's 39" Long and packed with detail. It can be built up as an an attractive Model Right out of the box, for the casual Modeler. However for guys like me, you can really go to town on this kit. I added my own Lighting system for both the Seaview and Flying Sub that comes with the kit. I also researched the best colors for the Sub, from guys who actually had access to the real Miniature.I removed all the seam lines on the Hull as well. This was a really fun build for me, and I await Moebius next offerings from the "Fantasy worlds of Irwin Allen"!!! I highly recommend this kit to any Classic Sci-Fi Fan and Modelers of all kinds. This is a High quality kit and worth every penny!!!
I still like the Movie version better June 29, 2008 Mark C. Danzig lll (Seattle, WA United States) -and no one has it right yet-if you look closely at the (larger model in the film), as they enter the mine field, there is a curved line on the front outer edge of the "MantaRay" fin, showing a slight downward indentation of it-maybe they somehow reduced drag in the water-or were used as diving planes?
