Amazon.com essential video Blue bounds into her first feature-length film ready to sing. She gets sidetracked along the way, of course, but that's part of the brilliant Blue's Clues formula. Each half-hour TV show presents engaging, easy-to-grasp mini-mysteries that are within toddlers' reach. This time Blue; her huge-eyed, slightly loopy human companion, Steve; and their cadre of talking-object friends are scurrying around, preparing for a backyard music show that day. Everybody picks a number to perform; Blue's is a duet with Tickety Tock, but the clock contracts laryngitis. Who will be Blue's new partner? A game of Blue's Clues reveals the hardly reluctant replacement. The standard discovery of three clues followed by the usual wind-down song would add up to a colossal disappointment in a feature film, so substantial rounding-out is provided. Steve stumbles onto a keyboard inhabited by a note called G-Clef (the unmistakable voice of Ray Charles), who gives a tour of how to make a song. First you pick the notes, then you work on rhythm, then comes tempo, and, last but not least, "you've got to give it soul." This movie's themes include perseverance (Tickety Tock can't sing but finds a way to contribute anyway) and self-empowerment. Blue's Big Musical Movie is a feast for little eyes and ears; the sets are so colorful they hurt grown-up eyes, and the songs--especially the one that gets the Charles treatment--are all sing-along-with-me winners. --Tammy La Gorce

Sit in your thinking chair and enjoy October 5, 2000 28 out of 31 found this review helpful
If your kids like Blue's Clues, they will love this movie. The story is set around a musical that Blue will perform in. There are many good musical numbers throughout, including one with the voice of Ray Charles. Although this is titled as a movie, its really just a jazzed up longer version of the tv show with much better music and a longer storyline. As I mentioned above, if your kids like Blue's Clues, this is definitely worth buying for them. The DVD itself is okay, but since the home video cassettes for Blue's Clues are so inexpensive, I'm not sure this is a must have DVD if this is also available on video. The picture is full frame, the sound is dolby stereo but not 5.1. There are a few extras on the DVD such as music videos that are cute for the kids also.
Very funny and a little sad November 15, 2000 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
My 17 month-old loves Blue, and he loves catchy music, so this movie really captures his interest. As a parent, I am glad we bought this movie because it is more sophisticated and less hokey than a lot of children's programs (i.e., Teletubbies and Barney) and so easier to watch over and over again, but it is still on a level that my young son can enjoy. The score is very well written, and the plot is interesting and funny (for adults, at least; my son couldn't care less about the plot, he just likes the music and Blue's very expressive ears). The one and only issue I have with this movie is that the plot includes several rather sad turns of events. At some point, everyone seems to be disappointed about something, or have their feelings hurt, or be party to a misunderstanding. Of course, that just makes it that much happier when everything works out in the end. And, for older kids, seeing Blue and Side Table Drawer and Periwinkle unhappy may teach empathy for others, and provide motivation to interact with the movie to try to help solve the problems.
My 2yr old is addicted to this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! September 21, 2004 A. Anderson (Indianapolis, Indiana United States) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I bought this DVD about a month before my son's 2nd birthday. From day 1 he loved it. He doesn't much care for Joe so I bought this is Blue's Clues Classic clues (wich he's only watched a few times). This is his absolute FAVORITE movie (he's watching it right now as we speak). My son's a High Energy child and rarely sits still to watch tv. He sits through this ENTIRE movie from beginning to end with very little movement (sometimes I want to put a mirror under his nose to make sure he's still breathing, LOL) He adores the music and the basic Blue's Clues plot. He loves screaming A CLUE A CLUE! and of course the music. His favorite is "The Show" song wich he sings everytime it comes on. I like the Ray Charles part the best and my son enjoys it to, he just says "Hey Hey, shooba dee day. Bee bop bay, hey hey. I can't tell where it comes from but when you sing SING sing there it is. The reason i love that is because MY SON DOESN'T TALK ALOT, LOL. He CAN talk he just chooses not to most of the time (wich is why I'm grateful for ASL but that's another review). This movie was worth every penny and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Money well spent!
It's BIG, it's BLUE, it's MUSICAL! January 26, 2002 Joseph Sparacio (Seattle, WA United States) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Blue's Big Musical Movie is a huge hit in our home. Although my 6 year old is too old for it, she enjoyed Blue's Big Musical Movie quite a bit, and can still enjoy the soundtrack. My four year old thinks it’s the greatest thing ever put on tape (or DVD!). If all that weren’t enough, our 2-year-old neighbor loves it too. Blue's Big Musical Movie is not just a long version of the TV show. It does incorporate all the familiar elements of Blue's Clues – the clues, the characters - but it elevates these things to the next level. The creators take advantage of the longer format by fleshing out the activities, and by playing out several plots simultaneously: Periwinkle's magic show, Sidetable's wish to sing, Steve's getting everything in order for the show. Blue's Big Musical Movie features some great songs, with catchy tunes and clever lyrics. Although this is a review of the DVD, I feel obliged to mention that the soundtrack to Blue's Big Musical Movie is one that our whole family enjoys. There are nifty bonuses like a lesson about music featuring Ray Charles - and yes, it was very helpful in teaching my kids about notes, rhythm, and tempo. So much product aimed at kids is either entertaining or educational, and rarely both. Blue's Big Musical Movie manages to be both. Big kudos to the people behind this exceptionally good kids movie, and to Steve who is so excellent in his role.
Best yet! October 5, 2000 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is the second and third copies I am buying of this video. Steve Burns and the Blue's Clues company of artists are at their best. This is truly a "movie", complete with a score...including "Snail" cruising across the backyard stage on a skateboard, making her singing debut. We also meet the newest neighbor, Periwinkle, the cat. There are gentle lessons in self esteem, the basics of reading music. Ray Charles' voice overs and music are a special treat. In my opinion....this is a winner!
