| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Molly Shannon, the latest Saturday Night Live comic to have a movie built around her, isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer

PAROCHIAL SCHOOL AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE... May 29, 2001 Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
Comedienne Molly Shannon recreates her Saturday Night Live character, Mary Katherine Gallagher, the gawky catholic school girl, for the big screen. At times, the film is very funny. Unfortunately, it is not very funny as often as one would like. What works great as a five minute skit on Saturday Night Live does not necessarily make for a great full length, feature film, even though quite a few of the Saturday Night Live regulars have parts in it. The film revolves around Mary Katherine Gallagher and her attempts to fit in and make the most popular boy in the school want her the way she wants him. She also wants to be a superstar in the worst way, even though her grandmother with whom she lives wants her to become a business woman. She does get her big break, however, when her school has a talent contest. Some of the funniest scenes in the movie occur when Mary Katherine, absorbed in her romantic fantasies and impervious to her surroundings, has a one sided conversation with an apparent fantasy lover for whom she substitutes a tree as a stand in. At times, she even acts out her romantic fantasy with the tree. Imagine it with a nun standing in the background observing Mary Katherine. It is hilarious. Unfortunately, those moments are few and far between. Still, if you are a Mary Katherine Gallagher fan, you will enjoy the film. If not, you may be disappointed.
Funniest Movie Ever March 12, 2000 Matt (Texas) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Superstar has got to be one of my favoritest movies of all time. There are great comedy scenes with Mary and a tree that are just hilarious. This movie stars one of the funniest people in the whole world...Molly Shannon aka Mary Katherine Gallagher! This is a great movie for the whole family and I would recommend this move to everyone who needs a good laugh!
Superstar! (Only read if you've seen the movie!) May 31, 2000 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I thought Superstar was the best movie I have ever seen! I can relate to her unpopularity. This is the best thing Molly Shannon has ever done! Superstar is about a girl named Mary Kathrine who is left out of everything. Mary even got put in Special Ed because of her weirdness. There are very funny things along the way. I think the casting is good. Elaine Hendrix always plays a good bad guy, and Will Ferrel is very funny. I also think whoever played Helen (Mary's friend) was very good.

HILARIOUS ! April 12, 2000 Chris Moore (Rushville, IN) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This movie is just plain funny. If you are a fan of SNL, you will love Superstar. I admit that Mary Katherine Gallagher is one of my least favorite skits from the show, but this move REALLY surprised me by just how hilarious it was- The parts with the tree and stop sign were instant classics! This is just a movie to make you laugh, people over analyize it too much-- just sit back, relax and enjoy yourself, you will end up loving it. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars-- it's very good.
