5 out of 5 stars "They call me Sir Robin, the brave..."   August 30, 2005

What a mountain of talent! Jim Henson continued his legendary roll with a charming made-for-TV version of "The Frog Prince". Like the equally wonderful "Hey Cinderella!" the plot more of less follows the classic fairy tale, but only the Muppets would have a plot hinge on a line like "Break the hall in the candle of her brain!".

Kermit guides us through the story as we meet the lovely Princess Lenora, just turned nineteen, and everything a beautiful Princess should be: Perfect complexion, flaxen hair, kind disposition, and wealth galore. There's only one problem: She only speaks backwards, and no one in the kingdom can understand a word she says. She wasn't always that way, someone's obviously been up to devious tricks, but who? It couldn't possibly be the hideous crone who claims to be the King's sister, could it?

Enter Robin the Frog, who claims to really be Robin the Brave, a prince under an enchantment. He recognizes the old crone; it's the same woman who turned him into a frog. From there it's all a series of twists and misunderstandings, falling in love and daring escapes until at last we come to the classic fairy tale ending.

What makes these Muppet tales so fun is the level of humor that appeals to kids and adults alike, such as the hilarious lullaby for a monster and the withering sarcasm of "Aunt Taminilla". If you like the Muppets I can't recommend "The Frog Prince" enough, and along with its counter point "Hey Cinderella!" the show represents what is missing in much of children's programming today. That's what DVD and video are for, right?

GRADE: A

(And if you enjoy this, check out Henson's little-known fairy tale show "Storyteller". It's even better.)

5 out of 5 stars lifetime favorite   September 7, 2000

I remember watching this movie during its first live telecast back in 1971 with my family. It quickly became my favorite movie with my sister and myself singing "ni'm einteen..." all day long. Now it is my 4yr old daughters favorite movie as well. As our library's copy is very bad with "blue out's" I really wish to purchase a few copies for us and our local library. I can't wait for it to be rereleased! Be sure to find this one to watch - it is definately an eternal classsic!

A classic fairytale retold in the unmistakable Henson style. Children and adults alike will enjoy this song filled version. With singing frogs galore and a backwards speaking princess, this movie will keep your family smiling and singing.

5 out of 5 stars Kiwi's Love It Too!   May 29, 2005

This is the best Muppets film/TV special ever! The story is lovely and Robin shines. The music is wonderful (apart from the Prince's song at the end (shudder)) and kids of all ages adore it (I'm 32!).
I live in New Zealand and have been hunting for a copy for 20 years, since my sister was born, and have finally found it here on Amazon. Just in time, as I have a little girl of my own now and I'm sure she will love it as much as I do.
I will be getting a copy ASAP but please, please release this on DVD as it is truely lovely and I think I will wear out the video!

3 out of 5 stars A Simple Story With Worthy Elements   February 19, 2001

Well, this certainly is not the sort of movie I normally watch. But even Charles Dickens enjoyed the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" in younger days. The story may be simple, and many of the characters are quite flat. But there are elements that make this video worthy of an hour. The songs are memorable, and the scenry is well done. Kermit is interesting as the narrator who is usually isolated from the events in the story, but does occasionally get caught in the action. (Not unlike some of Shakespeare's characters. Ex Apemantus from "Timon of Athens.") He even offers some clever comedy. One memorable moment is when Robin is afraid of being a frog forever, and Kermit asks: "And just what is wrong with being a frog?" Sweetums may not be very intelligent, but even in his villainous role he entertains us. But it is really Taminella who steals the show! I am not sure even Henson realized the captivating qualities of this character. Taminella is quite similar to some of Charles Dickens' villains. Quilp from Dickens' "Old Curiosity Shop" is a cruel and merciless villain. BUT, he carries real charm; he has a comeback line for anything; and for the most part he is calm and cool in a crisis; and you may actually find yourself cheering for him! Taminella could have been related to Quilp! She is very cruel and evil. BUT, she is always so charming! She is calm under most situations and even turns dangerous situations to her advantage. (Ex. She is confronted by the king, and after a moment of fear convinces him that she is his long lost sister!) She always puts her ambition in charming words: "There's been a slight change of plans....No you don't get to be the queen. I do....It's a great sacrifice. But I'll try to be brave." Even when the princess insults her in front of her father (who can't understand her) Taminella handles it by saying compliments make her blush. If you read my review on Dickens' "Old Curiosity Shop," you will recall that my biggest complaint was that Quilp made all the good characters dull and flat. Well, this is my biggest complaint about this movie. Taminella is so fascinating that the good guys (and girl) are so dull and flat. Today I still feel upset when good prevails in this movie. I still say Taminella would have been the greater queen to have around! So while this is a simple story it actually does carry some of the superb elements of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. (Let's just work on putting some life into the good characters!)
