Excellent beginner video, especially for larger woman January 24, 2001 C. S. Laird (Bothell, WA United States) 116 out of 118 found this review helpful
The background and music may be low budget, but the instruction is first rate. As a larger woman, I've been flirting with yoga for years, enjoying it's low impact stretching and other benefits, but frustrated by instruction geared for people built like Gumby. *Finally*, here's a video that shows you how it's done. The beginning segment is all about how to tailor a yoga workout for your body, using pillows, mats and other props. It shows you how to smooth any excess tissue you may have out of the way in order to get the most out of a pose. Two workouts follow, and the two instructors (round bodied women themselves) flow easily from pose to pose, taking turns instructing the viewer in both the beginner and advanced versions of each pose, all the while encouraging you to accept your current limits and not push your body farther then it's ready to go.The music's a little cheesy, and the camera work leaves something to be desired, but it's taught me how to make yoga work for *my* body -- something all the slick, well lit, inspirational music on the beach videos never managed to do.
Great for someone with NO yoga experience July 8, 2002 M. Awerbuch (San Francisco, CA United States) 63 out of 65 found this review helpful
As a larger but flexible woman, I was excited at the concept of a yoga video that offered me alternatives to the "classic" yoga positions and a way to cater tradional yoga to my round body. This video was somewhat disappointing. First of all the price. Kind of high by todays standards ..., but I thought it's a "specialized" video and would be worth the price. The next issue I had was a lack of positions. The six postions they actually cover are very BASIC , I was hoping for way more postions and ones that are more complicated for larger bodies. The positions in the flow series ( between the six instructed positions ) were more of what I was looking for, but they failed to describe/instruct those positions . I'm sorry, Mountain Pose is NOT a difficult position and should not be a challenge for anyone of any size. The filming was some what cheesy, the music a little too "Church-like", but if you are a total beginner with no yoga experience this video is good to start with. It does offer you good alignment techniques and it is non-threatening since the women in it are larger women themselves. If you are already versed in the basic yoga positions, you are better off skipping this video. If you are a total novice, this video will offer you great beginning positions, and support you in your progress.

Ordinary people teaching conscious movement without self-judgment: I found these tapes surprising in their simplicity. The postures are not only for "round bodies" but also for folks who haven't exercised for a while. They use a spontaneous movement technique for a few moments during each lesson. I've enjoyed these and actually USE them.
