This 27-minute tape aimed at teenagers mulling over career possibilities takes a brief look at seven occupations in the shiny new field of 3-D animation. Some, like architecture and product design, are longstanding domains reinvigorated by the ease of viewing a project via computer before it's even begun. Others, like virtual reality, owe their existence to 3-D computer imagery. The tape features visits to companies using this technology, ultrabrief interviews with professionals, and--you guessed it--a lot of animation. Highlights include a trip to Saturn (courtesy of NASA), a simulated ride on a southern Florida roller coaster, and a tour of a yet-to-be-built luxury home. As the credits roll, the various professionals urge their young viewers to follow their hearts--and pay attention to their math and science instructors. --Kimberly Heinrichs

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but no diversity   December 31, 2000

As a Careers teacher in a Middle School classroom, I will definitely use this video. It is a fine overview in a field a lot of young people are interested in. Unfortunately, I'll need to spend some time explaining to the students that technology industries employ a huge diversity of people from all over the world, despite what it looks like based on this video.

5 out of 5 stars Thrill your kids with the possibilities   August 30, 1999

My two sons sat down to watch this intelligent, well-done introduction to cyber-careers and were mesmerized! It's engaging with great special effects, but most of all it's got the information you want your kids to be interested in -- about the creative, unexpected work possibilities of the future. The computer animation section showing the mapping of the topology of Mars was, to me, unforgettable, and from my kids elicited that highest of compliments: whoa! Cool!
