Parents-to-be who are interested in the Lamaze method but can't attend a class will be happy to know they can learn it from this two-hour video. Taught by two certified instructors who are OB nurses, this is the only video course that teaches the complete method. Lamaze seeks to reduce pain through relaxation achieved by massage, focus, and a series of breathing techniques. The instructors share an easy rapport, demonstrating the exercises on each other before a roomful of couples and thoroughly explaining the purpose of labor, how to know when it begins, and its three stages. They describe medications and birth complications and include footage of both a natural Lamaze childbirth and a Caesarian delivery. While this tape was clearly shot in the 1980s (the hair styles and fashions are amusingly outdated), it does have new computer-generated diagrams, and the medical information seems up to date. The Lamaze technique itself has not altered, of course, and this tape remains the gold standard in that department. --Kimberly Heinrichs

2 out of 5 stars Basic, sloppy and outdated   July 27, 2004

This tape is a very basic childbirth informational video, and not the in-depth Lamaze training video my wife and I were hoping for as a refresher course for our second child's delivery. [...]I really expected a whole lot more. The camera work wasn't very good, and just based on hair styles the video looks like it was recorded in the 1970s. The two women who did the talking both egregiously and repeatedly mispronounced the word "centimeter" (a cornerstone word for childbirth), and not-so-advanced words like "synonymously" were misused. The two presenters also kept breaking out in fits of laughter over silly comments they kept interjecting.

5 out of 5 stars Great video - It helped a lot!   May 31, 2001

Both my husband and I were unable to attend Lamaze classes due to the fact that we work very different schedules. We were concerned that the pregnancy would be difficult without proper Lamaze instruction. Our doctor recommended "Having Your Baby." She indicated that it was tailor made for expecting mothers who were on bed rest, and for couples such as ourselves. After viewing the tape we were amazed at how detailed and enjoyable the video was. The instruction is wonderfully detailed and presented in a very uplifting manner. The video included full chapters on birth and C-sections, which no other video has. When it was time to have our child, we had no worries that we weren't prepared. This video made my pregnancy and delivery so much easier than I had expected. Thank you for this product.

5 out of 5 stars "Definitely the best video on the subject..."   June 4, 2001

In searching for the best aid in teaching expectant parents about childbirth, "Having Your Baby" surfaces as the most complete, the most useful, and the most balanced presentation available. As an adjunct to class, or especially for those who cannot get to a class, it beautifully prepares the expectant parents for the labor and birth process. The information is accurate and up to date, and the actual footage of hospital procedure and the birth process is extremely beneficial to see, as well as very tastefully presented. I highly recommend "Having Your Baby" as the best presentation on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars a good refresher   February 6, 2005

Yes, the footage is a little dated, but the information is still accurate. My husband and I took the full Lamaze series of classes when we were expecting our daughter in 2003. We needed a refresher for the birth of our son (due in 2005), but were unable to attend Lamaze classes in-person due to scheduling conflicts. This video (available in VHS and DVD format) provided us just what we needed and, as an added bonus, included two live births (one vaginal delivery and one c-section). The information contained in the video and the structure of the filmed class seemed almost identical to the in-class training we received in 2003.

I don't write this to be mean for the sake of it, but please....SAVE YOUR MONEY! At a time when advanced filming and editing techniques could potentially have created a useful and accessible at-home tutor for Lamaze, this offering manages to preserve every excruciating and ponderous nuance of actually being there, that you were trying to avoid by purchasing this. It looks like it was filmed by the the high school media club, which would be tolerable if it offered useful information. The self satisfied instructors walk you through their secret ritual which you are asked to observe and somehow repeat, yet, while they clearly believe that they are describing this in perfect detail, the viewer is somehow left with an impression, but not a plan for their own utilization of the information. You purchase this because you want a step by step plan and a clear rationalization for each part of the process. This melds together in a way which leaves you feeling more perplexed than you would have done if you marched into the hospital on birth day, and said to the nurse, "tell us what to do". I think that would actually be a better plan, if this is your only tool to learing the birth process. Couple this format with musical backdrop that makes you want to tear out your own hair, and that of your partner, and the treat is complete. Oh, there is one interesting section showing vaginal and ceserean births, but with the exception of a bit of a massage, which you probably could have figured out by yourself, these sections fail to display any of the techniques taught in the video. The birth actually seem to have gone off quite well with no Lamaze at all. Still, seeing the births is interesting if you have not experienced that sort of thing yet, but, believe me, you are going to see this one way or the other, whether you drop your cash on this or not. Lastly, my wife, who has had a baby before, several years ago, used Lamaze through her labor at that time. We got this so that she could review, and I could learn the techniques. Result? Although she had used Lamaze before, after viewing this, she suddenly had no idea what she or I was supposed to do. And me? Well....you know.
